To Kill A Wolf

1292 Words
Naeryssa’s POV The Drakkenfell wolf stood over us, amber eyes gleaming with cruel amusement, staring at us like two helpless creatures. Luceris shifted beside me, placing himself half a step in front of me, his grip tightening around my arm. “I won’t let you touch her,” he warned, voice taut. The wolf’s lips curled. “Do you think you can stop me?” His gaze flicked over Luceris dismissively. “I can smell your fear, shifter.” “Why?!” I wailed. “What did they ever do to you?!! Why did you kill him?! Why?!” He barely looked at me, unfazed. He wore a smug look on his face, canines glinting as he smirked. “My father kept peace,” I continued. “He had no enemies. He tried—” “Peace?” he interrupted with a scoff. “Your father was a traitor. He got exactly what he deserved. You don’t think daddy’s a saint. Do you?” Traitor. The word hit me like a slap. My father did nothing to deserve dying this way, in his own home! “You’ll pay,” I said, my body recoiling in wild, unbridled rage. “All of you! For what you did to my parents, and for what you did to Astraelle.” “Oh, careful Princess, those words outweigh your abilities. You’re just a weak human. Like your mother.” “You asshole!” Luceris growled. My vision hazed, the world around me spun as I glanced back to see her lifeless body, the torn velvet gown she had on, her eyes wide with terror. I clenched my fists tight, knuckles turning white. “But your father?” He laughed, his voice grating against my nerves when he continued on. “He tried to save his pathetic little kingdom of weaklings. You should’ve heard his screams when we stripped him of his wolf. I’m sure the Alpha King will be pleased too when I take you to him.” “I’ll f*****g kill you!” I yelled. Something snapped inside me and I yanked my hands out of the elite’s grasp, lunging at the son of a b***h but Luceris caught me around the waist, hauling me back with all his strength. “Naeryssa…no!” But the wolf was already shifting. His jaws elongated into snout, limbs to hackles and in seconds a massive wolf stood where the man had been; eyes burning amber, jaws dripping as he snarled. Luceris shoved me behind him and let his own shift tear through him. His wolf was leaner, gray with streaks of midnight, but no less lethal. They crashed together in a blur of teeth and claws, snarling and ripping, the sound echoed through the palace. I pressed against the throne, heart hammering frantically in my chest. Luceris was strong and was my father’s best elite. But, the Drakkenfell wolf was bigger and vicious, the elite was no match for him. He drove Luceris back, claws raking across his flank. The elite winced as crimson seeped through his wounds. “Let go, Luceris! He’s going to kill you!” I whimpered. He yelped, twisting and sinking his teeth into the other’s shoulder. They rolled, smashing into the nearest pillar that caved under their weight. The black wolf pinned Luceris beneath him, snapping his jaws tight as he bit into his shoulders. The elite’s wolf cried out in pain. I’d lost my kingdom, my family, Luceris was all I have left. I couldn’t lose him too! My feet moved before I could think. I slipped behind the black wolf while he was focused on tearing a chunk of flesh out of the elite’s shoulder. My hand shot out, flattening my palm against the fur of his back. The air thrummed with electricity, I gasped when bursts of white strobes pulsed under my fingers like fire pouring from my veins into his. I couldn’t think. I pushed everything I had into him: pain, agony, desperation and rage. White, hot rage. The wolf froze. His eyes widened, pupils rolling to the back of his head in shock. A low, pained whimper escaped his throat. His body shuddered, fur receding, bones snapping back as he shifted to human. He collapsed to his knees right in front of me, naked, trembling, eyes glazed. Luceris shifted back to skin, staggering towards as blood leaked from his open wounds. “Naeryssa, don’t do it!” I didn’t listen. I yanked the dagger from my boot; the small ceremonial blade my mother had given me on my sixteenth birthday. Lifting it by the hilt, I drove it into his throat, the coppery smell of blood hit me almost instantly. “This is for my mother!” I said with a frigid voice that scared me. His eyes widened in horror, he made choking sounds, gurgling with hands clawing at the wound. I twisted the blade free and plunged it into his chest, right over his heart. “And this is for my father.” He toppled sideways, eyes blank, blood pooling beneath my feet. I stared at the body, faltering back when realization dawned on me that I’d just killed someone. The room spun. My vision blurred with tears that stung my face, my knees threatening to yield under my weight. The power I’d used, it took something from me. I could feel the hollow ache behind my ribs, like I’d burned a part of my own life away. Luceris lurched toward me, grabbing me just in time. “f**k! You shouldn’t have killed him. They’ll come for us now, all of Drakkenfell.” “I couldn’t,” I shuddered. “I couldn’t let him kill you.” “We need to leave, now!” His body suddenly tensed and he wore an impassive look on his face, almost like he could sense something approaching, this time. He helped steady me, he leaned down to grab something before returning to me. “I know some hidden tunnels that lead out of the kingdom. You should be safe once you get past the borders.” “I’m not leaving my home.” I shook my head hesitantly as I sniffled. “I’m not running, not with father and mother laying dead with no resting place. Leave if you want to. Your Alpha is dead, you have no sworn loyalty to me.” “Dead or not, my loyalty to the Veyl bloodline remains the same.” He hissed, “They’re coming! All of them! They know you’re still alive. Do you think I can last a minute, battling a Drakkenfell wolf?! I’ll take care of this, I’ll put the King and his Luna to rest. But you leave first!” Luceris tugged me back to my feet, snapped an obsidian bracelet with runes around my wrist I trashed frantically in realization. “No! You can’t bind my powers. That’s all I have left!” “Go to Veyorta.” He groaned when his healing kicked in, and the skin of gaping wounds at his shoulder began to knit back in place. “I’ll meet you there. When I do, I’ll take off this bracelet. But until then, you’re not allowed to use your powers.” Lifting me off my feet, he tossed me over his shoulders, pulled at a lever resting behind the throne, the walls caved, revealing an entrance at the side. “Let me go, you asshole!” I bucked and kicked but he ignored me, tossing me into the opening and mouthing a curse under his breath. I stumbled back, hitting the ground with a thud. “Run, Naeryssa! As fast as you can.” Those were the last words he spoke before the walls sealed tight.
