Chapter Seven

Anderson's POV Was this what it felt like to be powerless? All through the morning, before the break, I could not shake off the anger gnawing at me. I was furious that I had to hold back from teaching that bully and his lackeys a lesson. My entire life, I had made sure that anyone who crossed me regretted it. But here I was, restrained by my father's warning. Lila and Tasha told me that they were not the kind of people to mess with, including some others in other classes. "It's complicated," Tasha replied when I pressed them for more information, and she added that a senior named Cara would explain it to me better. That was when I realised that she's the one the principal talked about earlier. Some of my classmates’ pitying glances only made my anger worse. I hated being seen as someone who needed sympathy. The more it made me think about the bullies, the more determined I became to teach them a lesson without exposing my identity. Lucas and I grabbed lunch together during the break at the school cafeteria. “So,” he began, “how’s your first day going so far?” "Fine,” I replied, trying to keep my tone even. "What about you?” He shrugged. "Same here. I just hope it stays that way." I paused before asking, "Has anyone from your class... maybe confronted you yet?" His brows furrowed in confusion, and his fork stopped mid-air. "What do you mean?" "You know..." I shrugged, then added, "the usual stuff bullies do to new students." He replied that no one had, so I leaned in, lowering my voice, and explained what happened to him. Before I could finish, he snapped, setting his fork down. "What? What did you do to them, Anderson? You must have provoked them somehow!” I stared at him in disbelief, seething. "You think I provoked them? They picked on me without me doing anything." "I wonder what your reaction would have been if I had retaliated." I scoffed, my face scrunched in disgust. "Well, I'll have to inform the Alpha about it. I'm not sure this school is—" "Don't you dare!" I interrupted, my voice rising, but only loud enough for him to hear. “If you do, I’ll hate you forever, Lucas. I swear.” His mouth shut, but his eyes remained worried. “I just don’t think you are ready for this kind of environment. It's dangerous. You know what is at stake here," he muttered. I shot him a glare. "Do you even have any idea what it’s like to be humiliated by people who aren’t even close to being on my level?" He sighed, running a hand through his hair, and apologised. “I’m sorry, man. I didn’t mean to piss you off." He leaned in closer. "So, what’s your plan? If they think they have control over you, they are not going to stop. And it might get to a point where you can’t handle it anymore. I don’t want—" Before he could finish, a girl who had been staring at us came over to our table. Her dark hair was tied in a neat ponytail. "Seeing you with Lucas, you must be the other new student," she said. My brows furrowed in confusion about how she knew Lucas’ name. “Yeah, he is. I'm his older brother," he replied, smiling. She turned her gaze back to me. “I’m Cara. The principal would have told you guys about me." That was when I realised she's the senior who’s meant to take us on a tour round the school and explain things to us as Lila and Tasha had said. I raised an eyebrow. “How do you know Lucas?" She smirked. “Because he’s in my class.” She crossed her arms. "Since you are done eating, how about we take the tour now?" We stood, following her as she led us down the bustling hallway, pointing out various facilities, classrooms, and recreational areas. “Do you do this for every new student?” I asked. "Yeah,” she replied without looking back. “Why you, though?” I pressed. "Why not anyone else? I mean, it's something anyone could do." She glanced back at us, her expression unreadable. “You’ll understand soon enough.” Her response made Lucas and me exchange glances in confusion. Finally, after showing us other key areas, she stopped and turned to face us, her expression serious. “Now to answer your questions,” she began. She took a deep breath. “The principal told me that both of you are pure humans." We nodded. “That’s… unusual,” she continued. "This school doesn’t accept pure humans. And they don’t accept mid-semester transfers. It shows that your connection is really strong." She was right. My dad told me he and the principal used to be best friends before he became the Alpha and focused on the pack. That was why the principal agreed to take us in after no other school in the city was ready to accept us mid-semester. However, the principal warned my dad about how dangerous it could be if we kept our identities hidden—he knew Lucas and I were Lycans. I agreed regardless, leaving Lucas with no choice but to go along with it. It was not easy convincing my parents, especially my dad, but I wanted to experience the thrill of pretending to be human, aside from the bigger reason I came to the city. "But honestly, it’s risky," she added. Lucas arched his brows in confusion. "Risky? What do you mean?" “This school is dangerous, even for supernatural beings. It’s worse for pure humans like you. And I’m in charge of the supernatural affairs here, overseeing safety and interactions among the different factions, which answers your question and curiosity." I could not hide my curiosity. “Dangerous how?” She sighed. “The werewolves. They are the dominant faction in this city and here. And they like to intimidate others for control. Especially people like you who they perceive as weaker. Honestly, if the other students find out you are pure humans, I don’t think you’ll last until the end of the semester.” Lucas paled. “What do you mean by ‘won’t last’?” “I mean, you might not survive,” she said flatly. "So, I'd advise you guys to stay clear of trouble with them and pretend to be supernatural hunters to avoid drawing attention. It'll make you less of a target." "You obviously know a bit about the supernatural world from your old school since they do accept both supernaturals and pure humans, so I’m guessing you have some martial skills?" she added. "Does it matter?" I asked, furrowing my brows. She shrugged. "It doesn't, as long as you stay out of trouble. "But in this city, trouble has a way of finding those who try to avoid it," she scoffed. Dangerous? The school and this city sounded like my kind of place, which made things more interesting. "Are our secrets safe with you?” I teased. She gave a faint smile, nodding. "Definitely." "So how are we supposed to keep up this identity so they know who we are, especially since we are not part of the hunter family in this city?" Lucas asked her. She nodded. "Good question. The principal will add you two to the hunter faction in the school's Book of Life very soon." "Book of Life?" he repeated, clearly confused. She handed him a thick book. "This contains the list of all the factions' members at the school. It will help you know who to avoid, especially." "The one you really want to avoid is Axel. He’s one of the Alpha's sons, and he’s always looking for someone to tear down to prove his dominance. If he catches even a whiff of weakness from you... well... just try your best to avoid him." She raised a finger. "But you have to keep your real identities hidden. That’s the most important thing." She welcomed us to the school and the city again, hoping we’d find our time here interesting, though she said she doubted it. As she walked away, after sharing her contact information in case we needed help, I could not resist teasing her. "Would it be too much if I called you in the middle of the night for a little help..." I tilted my head, smiling. "Let's say a clarification?" She rolled her eyes, but a hint of a smile tugged at her lips as she turned. "Call me, and I’ll block your number." I shrugged, smiling. "I think it’s worth a shot since it sounds like a challenge to me." "Daring me?" She chuckled. "I guess we'll find out very soon," I replied. After she disappeared, Lucas nudged me. “Why do you seem unbothered about everything she just told us?" I shrugged, a grin still on my face. “Because this school and the city are going to be way more interesting than I thought. I’m actually looking forward to seeing how this plays out.” “Interesting?" he scoffed in disbelief. "We are meant to be panicking, Anderson!” I gave him a sidelong glance. "You just wouldn’t get it,” I said, turning away and leaving him standing there, bewildered. And he would not. There were too many things I needed to figure out about this city, especially after what I had discovered on my first day here. "You are going to get us killed," he muttered as he followed me. I glanced at him over my shoulder, a faint smirk tugging at my lips. "Maybe. But it’ll be worth it."
