Derek's POV Napa Valley Inside My Car Meeting Jess tomorrow afternoon was looming, naturally ensuring another sleepless night. Until now, I'd jokingly referred to this as "Sleepless in Napa". Remember that movie, Sleepless in Seattle, where sleep evaded them, and they listened to the radio to hear their inner voices? The movie ended perfectly sweet, unlike my current situation, which felt like a legendary story still unfolding. I hoped it wouldn't abruptly end before truly beginning, that it wouldn't halt after a mere introduction; rather, I hoped it would evolve into a beautiful, enduring story. Lying on the bed at the Napa hotel, it felt surreal how physically close I now was to Jess. We were under the same sky, on the same land - a tangible proximity, not merely an abstract connection. If our hearts had been drawing closer, now our bodies were inching physically towards each other, with no exaggeration. In my fridge were the provisions I had prepared before entering Napa - a case of Heineken, a case of Pierre sparkling water, three cans of Red Bull, and three bottles of water. I was well-stocked on beverages, and in terms of snacks, I had a bag of chocolates - for energy and to sweeten the moment. I often teased Jess on Messenger, joking that her sweet nature must be from indulging in chocolates. Every time she heard this, she would laugh, insisting her sweetness was innate, no chocolate required. I couldn't help but chuckle in response; some things need no argument. My thoughts wandered aimlessly, exhaustion looming after nine hours of continuous driving. Sleep began to beckon me. In my dreams, it almost felt like Jess was right there, only to wake and find the room empty. A sense of disappointment tugged at me briefly, swiftly replaced by the anticipation of reuniting with her the following afternoon. True happiness felt remarkably pure at that moment. I grinned foolishly, rolled over, and embraced sleep once more. The following morning, I enjoyed the oriental breakfast provided by the hotel, along with a cup of coffee, two donuts, and some honeydew melon before setting out. December in Napa, California felt exceptionally pleasant. While this wasn't my first visit to Napa, my previous trip with an ex-girlfriend had been during a different season. Summer had been scorching, unlike now - early winter with a perfect temperature. I layered up with a long-sleeve shirt, a jacket, hands tucked in the pockets as I strolled through the streets of Napa. Time slipped away swiftly as I sauntered from one winery to the next, exploring the unique boutiques in the charming town. By lunchtime, a brief stop at a McDonald's ensured I'd refueled for the day. As 2:30 PM approached, with just half an hour until 3 PM, I drove towards the designated spot, arriving promptly. Parking by the roadside, I left the engine running and awaited Jess's arrival. Exactly at 3 PM, Jess emerged in a purple coat and black jeans, hands nestled in her pockets, scanning the surroundings before offering a warm smile and approaching my car. Step by step, as Jess drew nearer, I experienced a profound sense of time's tangible passage for the first time. Each second bore weight, striking a chord deep within me. She reached the car's side, opened the passenger door, and took her place inside. "Hi Jess," I paused, momentarily lost in her presence before regaining composure to greet her. Her amusement was evident, breaking the tension effortlessly. "Um..." I felt a blush creep up, momentarily embarrassed at my own lapse. Jess chuckled warmly, her melodious voice resonating with a comforting familiarity. I turned to her, captivated by her composure as she settled in the passenger seat, eyes fixed ahead. "How are you feeling now? The usually eloquent Derek, at a loss for words?" Indeed, public figures exuded a unique calmness amidst such moments. "Jess..." I called out again, prompting her to meet my gaze with a smile. Mesmerized by her presence, I was momentarily lost in that moment, wishing it could linger forever. Engaging in conversation, the initial awkwardness faded as we grew more at ease with each other. Our daily exchanges had bridged the gap, ensuring a sense of familiarity even in person. Though our chat continued, the conversation flowed seamlessly as the day progressed. It was only later that I realized I had forgotten to offer her the drinks I had prepared. Without hesitation, Jess reached for a sparkling water, sipping casually. Our synchrony felt so natural - a brief pause, a shared smile, before seamlessly resuming our exchange. As the evening descended, and the sunset painted the sky, Jess mentioned her return to the hotel. This encounter would mark our only moment together today. Satisfied with the connection, I nodded in agreement. A promise to continue our chat on Messenger, a brief farewell, and she departed. She closed the car door and disappeared into the Napa sunset, leaving a fleeting ache in my heart, mingled with a poignant sense of departure.
