7 Ashton The moment the Spring Court soldier stormed into the house with his dark green and golden uniform and pointing the golden blade of his spear at Hayley’s head, my blood turned cold. A sliver of panic snaked through my chest. No, not my queen. I tugged Hayley behind me and faced the soldier, cursing myself for leaving my sword upstairs. Holy petal, they had found Hayley but how? “General Ashton, step aside if you don’t want to die,” the soldier said, the golden blade of his spear trained on the middle of my chest. “Over my dead body,” I said in English, because my queen had asked me to stop speaking fae. Three more soldiers stepped through the door. I retreated two feet, taking Hayley with me. Her mother scurried back, hiding behind me with Hayley. I watched the soldiers. F
