Emmy wasn’t sure why she felt nervous.
It wasn’t their first time meeting. They had talked, laughed, shared quiet moments under falling snow. And yet, this felt different. This time, there were no accidents. No coincidences. Just a choice.
She saw him waiting near the frozen pond, his hands tucked into his coat, his breath visible in the cold air.
When he noticed her, his face softened into that familiar smile-the one that made everything else feel quieter.
“You came,” he said.
Emmy nodded, her lips curving gently. “I said I would.”
They stood there for a moment, neither rushing to fill the silence. It wasn’t uncomfortable. It was careful. Honest.
“I’m sorry,” Emmy said finally. “For assuming. For not coming inside.”
Leo shook his head. “You don’t have to apologize for protecting yourself.”
His words settled deep inside her.
“I just…” she hesitated. “I didn’t expect to care so quickly.”
Leo didn’t look surprised.
“I did,” he admitted quietly.
Emmy looked at him then-really looked at him. There was no hesitation in his eyes. No pretending. Just truth, standing in the cold between them.
“I meant what I said,” he continued. “I’m glad you came back.”
The wind stirred softly around them, carrying the distant sound of laughter from the town square.
Emmy realized something in that moment: she wasn’t afraid of the past anymore. She wasn’t waiting for it to repeat itself. She was here, now, standing in the middle of something new.
Not perfect. Not guaranteed.
But real.
Leo stepped a little closer, close enough that she could feel the warmth of his presence without him touching her.
“Are you still leaving after the holidays?” he asked.
The question lingered in the air.
Emmy didn't answer right away.
Because for the first time since she arrived, she wasn't sure anymore.
