The town square glowed that evening, strings of golden lights stretching from rooftop. Music drifted softly through the air as families gathered for the annual winter festival.
Emmy hadn't planned on staying long. But when she saw Leo standing near the giant tree, hands tucked into his coat, she felt that familiar warmth pull her closer.
"You made it," he said, relief flickering across his face.
"I wouldn't miss it," she replied, though she hadn't known that until now.
They stood side by side as the mayor began the countdown to light the tree.Snow began falling again-slow, delicate flakes catching in Leo's hair.Emmy laughed and reached up without thinking, brushing one away.
The touch lingered longer than it needed to.
When the lights flickered on, the crowd cheered. For a moment, everything sparkled-the tree, the snow, the sky. But Emmy wasn't looking at any of it. She was looking at him.
"Can I ask you something?" Leo asked quietly, his voice softer than usual.
She nodded.
"Why did you really come back?"
The question wasn't accusing, it was careful.
Emmy hesitated, watching her breath form small clouds between them."I think I needed to remember who I was before everything became... complicated," she admitted.
Leo studied her, not trying to fix it, not trying to interrupt. Just listening.
"I used to believe things were simple,"she continued.
That if you care enough, everything worked out."
“And now?” he asked gently.
“Now I’m not sure. But I’m starting to believe second chances aren’t about fixing the past. They’re about choosing differently.”
Leo’s expression shifted-something deeper, more vulnerable. “I’m glad you came back,” he said. “Even if it’s just for now.”
For now.
The words settled between them, tender and uncertain.
As the music swelled and laughter filled the square, Emmy realized this was no longer just holiday magic or coincidence. Something real was forming-slow, careful, and honest.
And for the first time in a long while, she wasn’t afraid of where it might lead.
We’re slowly moving from light holiday charm into emotional depth now.
