Alice slid out of the SUV and took everything in. The manor was absolutely stunning. Back home she lived in a single wide trailer next to a marsh in the deep country. This was definitely a change for her. She turned to Matthew to ask if this was Marcella’s home but his back was turned as he walked away with arrogance. She hurriedly grabbed her bags and skipped her way to the front door with excitement.
A lovely lady named Katie opened the door for her,
„Hello, can I help you, ma’am?“
Matthews' voice bellowed throughout the house.
„She’s our guest. Her name is Alice. Show her to her room and do not be rude.“
Katie blushed and opened the door to allow Alice in.
The entrance hall was absolutely magnificent and had a grand staircase to the second floor. Floral arrangements were in vases on tables at both sides, which made the room look elegant. Katie motioned for Alice to follow her. Up the stairs and down the hall was the door to the room where Alice was going to be living.
"I am the housekeeper. If you need anything, please do not hesitate to ask. It would be no trouble for me, make yourself comfortable." Katie said as she exited the room.
Alice looked around the room in awe. She had never been anywhere so beautiful before. Her mother was not rich by any means. She provided for her daughter, but as a single mother, it was very difficult. In the past, she had only ever lived in low-income housing. How was her mother such good friends with people like this, she wondered. Alice looked around the room and noticed the large alcove window which had been built into bookshelves, the large antique vanity mirror, the four-poster bed with a black lace canopy, and realized that she was tired from the flight. It was only noon now and she figured she could take a short cat-nap.
*BEEP BEEP BEEP*
An alarm coming from outside startled Alice awake. It sounded like it might have been coming from the guard house. She looked through the window to notice it was already dark outside, the moon was full and looked to have a red glow about it. As far as she was aware, there was not a full moon that night. Alice looked out the bedroom window and below was a garden with light posts that illuminated patches of the walkways. A large shadow darted across the yard and disappeared. Alice jumped at the quick movement. She decided to go see what it was. Once she reached the door to the garden, she stepped outside and the breeze brushed through her hair. The scent in the air was damp and earthy as if it had just rained. At the end of the pathway a loud rustling was nearly deafening. She crept silently letting the wind rustle the branches of the bushes and through her shirt and down her back. Her hair gently caressing her face and lifting her scent into the breeze. A chill went down her spine, and goosebumps appeared on her flesh.
A hand came from nowhere and touched her cheek and ran down her jaw to her neck, pulling her hair to the side. Warm breath brushed her cheek and the hand that was on her face moved down her body to grip around her waist. Fear rushed into her throat and she gasped.
"Who are you? What....Do you.. want!" she exclaimed.
The person was behind her holding her waist and had his lips pressing against her neck as his nostrils brought in her scent with a huff. She pulled away from him and ran forward, tripping over a loose paver, cutting into her knee. Blood gently started pooling at the cut and she grimaced.
"Please don't touch me, I don't know you!" she panted.
Stepping from the darkness, the man had his face obscured but his body was slightly illuminated by the nearby lamps. She could not recognize him but she felt that she knew him somehow. He had defined muscle tones and abs that had perspiration dripping from them. A tiny tattoo stationed on his right chest was of a crescent moon and a lily. Alice decided she couldn't stay there longer with this stranger and got up to run back into the house. The door was still open as she hurled herself through, grabbing the handle and slamming it as she passed the threshold. She was panting hard as she locked the door and stared outside to see that the man had disappeared and a wolf-like dog was now in the spot where she had just been standing. The dog was licking the blood that had dripped from her knee onto the paver. He was a black wolf-dog with bright blue eyes and seemed to notice her staring at him.
Finally, the adrenaline that had been pumping through her veins dissipated and she blacked out, falling to the floor with a thud.
