That evening after dinner the girls and Herr Blitzen left for a theatre, while Larose, chafing at the enforced inactivity, for hour after hour, kept watch in a corner of the lounge for the coming of some messenger with a big envelope. He was half dozing when, just after ten, he was galvanized into alertness by seeing a man enter the lounge from the street and hand in something across he reception counter. Rising quickly to his feet, he saw the clerk pick up a long envelope. The man who had brought it just nodded, and, without a word, left the hotel. Larose went after him.
