The atmosphere between us was heavy, stifling, resembling an impenetrable barrier. Each word from my mother tightened the grip around my chest, as if she were sketching a detailed outline of all I had been striving to forget. Her gaze—those eyes that seemed to uncover every hidden truth—bore into me, anticipating a response.
