Hazel blinked out of everything, she was not expecting this reply. She looked at him as if she had seen a ghost. The man was insulting him from the day they met and he was here to befriend her?
“You better get healthy so that we can finish the work in the library. So, I will come to see you everyday to make sure that you are healthy.” he scratched his nose with a flushed face and ran out of the room as soon as she nodded her head.
Hazel blinked and then a smile crept up to her dimmed face. She looked at the flowers in her hand and traced it with her fingers..
“The wild grass and flowers.”
—------------------------
It had been three days since she was stuck in her bed. As promised, Peter visits her daily. He told her about the stores of his village. How he catched running sheep and how his mother beat him with a stick after that.
About his friends and his life in the palace. He was not exactly working here. But his father was a knight here and one day he wanted to be one too. His mother had always motivated him to train harder for it. But he often got tired of the rough training and found an escape through helping maids.
That is, every maid treats him kindly. Alice was one of them. He knew Alice did not like working hard. And he did not mind doing some chores so he ended up helping her often. But he did not know that she was harassing Hazel.
He didn't know that Hazel was a noble woman with a title. He scratched his nape again.
“I apologize for my misbehavior that day. I thought that you were looking down on me because of my color.'' Peter had tanned skin as his father. They seem to be from the barbarian lands.
Though they were strong because of the same reason and often recruited on the senior posts in the army, they were looked down on because of their lineage and many people looked down on them because of that.
Peter was more sensitive about it than his family. Hazel looked at his dark hands and his soft features. She instinctively touched his hand and compared their skin.
“I think you are handsome. Older woman like man with dark skin so you should not worry that much.'' Peter blinked. The girl was only two years older to him yet she said it like she was too old. And what did she mean by she liked tanned skin.
“Do.. do you have no shame?” he stammered as he took his hands away from her grip and glared at her. “You should be more reserved as a girl.” he blabbered and ran out of the room making Hazel blink again.
She shook her head as she was habitual of his antics now and did not mind them. It had been three days since she was cooped in this room.
She came to know that Alice was scolded for ignoring her. Cedric had asked Alice to take care of Hazel but the woman was only jealous of nobles and wanted to show her some authority. With work, she forgot about Hazel and did not really want to hurt the child.
But she was still dismissed from her work. Since then, maids were making sure that Hazel was served all her meals. And that she was not asked to do something. But they were too distant with her. They did not want to talk to Hazel if not needed and only replied curtly.
Hazel wrapped her arms around her body as she reminded herself that it was not her mistake but it was not Cedric’s mistake too. A maid made a mistake and Cedric dismissed her. It was only fair from his view. And she should thank him for that.
She had been reminding herself for the past two days that she should go and apologize to Cedric or at least thank him for taking care of her. But her feet just did not move. He did not come to see her in three days and she did not go to him that was it.
“Perhaps, it was better that way. I think I can live my life here silently without meeting him once.” she whispered and the door knocked.
“My lady, the lord is here to see you.”
“......” did she just jinx herself again? She stared at the door as if she was seeing a ghost.
“My lady?” the voice came again and sounded urgent this time.
“Oh, yes. Alright.” The door finally opened and Cedric walked in. His presence made the room smaller. The furniture looked tiny in front of him. She looked tiny in front of him.
Cedric scanned the room, the future, her blanket and his eyes paused on her lap. There was a bouquet of wildflowers lying there. She suddenly became conscious when he did not look away.
“How are you feeling now?” he whispered making her bow her head. His eyes were too much to bear. She felt conscious of him so much.
“I am better, thank you.” she whispered but the man did not take his gaze away.
“Next time if you face any trouble, you can come to me. If not, you can contact my aide. She will help you. Alice had already left, but I assure you that it would not be repeated.
I have arranged a teacher for you so that you could continue your studies. Is there anything else that you need?” Hazel shook her head at once. She did not need anything from this man.
Cedric did not move. As if he could read her hatred from him on her face. He kept staring at it for a long while. Just when she had thought that he had no wish to leave, and she should thank him now, he stood up and walked to the door.
“Get more rest, you still look sick,”
