Abandoned Girl

Hazel was hungry, exhausted despite having some rest and injured. Yet… she was not worried about all those things. “My father’s funeral? Has he been buried already?” she asked in a desperate voice when the siblings paused. For a second, she felt they were in pain too when they nodded. “Yes, we have thought about waiting for you. But you were taking too much time and your brother's face was badly damaged. If you want, you can visit his grave before leaving. That is the least amount of mercy we can show you.” Announced Luther in a cold voice, but she could feel the tinge of sadness in his eyes. She stood up and followed the maid with trembling steps. The images of her father and mother smiling and following her in the woods flashed past her eyes again and again. Everything felt so surreal. Only yesterday, they were the happiest family in the world. And now.. Tears brimmed and she fell on the ground the moment she saw her father’s grave. She crawled closer and touched it with burdening sadness engulfing her soul. “It should have been me. I should have died in the accident.” she cried harder but no one was there to hear the pleas. She felt like her heart would explode from the pain. She cried and cried until her throat was burning and her body went cold. “She would die this way, my lord.” the physician who had treated her when she had come to the palace whispered worriedly to his master. Luther sneered. They have arranged a physician because they have thought the girl will inherit all the properties. They would need her. But now she was nothing more than a beggar. “Would it not be better? This way she would be able to live with her family in heaven.” he mocked in a cold voice making Physician flinch. He wanted to help the young girl. He had seen her often visiting their palace with her family. Every Time she visits, they bring a lot of gifts not only for the family but for maid servants too. Once she was a child and injured her feet while playing. He had treated her at that time. Since then she had often brought sweets for him. And even gifted him a new dress. His hands clenched into a fist thinking about that past. Their master had such a cordial relationship with her family. But now that she had lost her wealth, no one wanted to take care of her. Would it really be best that she died here near the grave of her father? “You can leave. Do not create a scene here and do not go against my orders.” Luther warned before giving her last glance and returning to his palace. There were still guests he needed to deal with. He had to pay for all the expenditure of his brother’s death and his funeral when he did not get a single coin from his properties. “Tsk! It is all because of that bastard, Cedric. He had manipulated the will and properties. I am sure about it. Just you wait, I will not let this go.” he gritted his teeth and entered inside. The physician stood there with a few more servants who were worried about the girl. But none of them dared to go adsint their master. “Let me enter. I want to bid goodbye to my friend.” The physician heard the commotion at the door and saw the knights stopping a man from entering. He frowned and looked at the butler. “He is Cedric Mayhard, he is the business partner of the deceased lord. My lord had refused him to enter.” The butler explained with a sigh and shook his head. He left to inform Luther about the visitor. The physician looked at the grim man. He did not look sad or upset at all. His face was shrouded with a fog of mystery and coldness. As if he was indifferent to the whole world. People like him did not care about the death of others. As expected, when the knights did not let him enter, he gritted his teeth and turned to the left. The physician should have ignored him since he did not know the man, but for some reason, he ran toward the man. “My lord.. Wait! My lord.” When the knights stared at him in confusion, he mumbled something and they rolled their eyes, but let him leave the palace. “My lord, lord Mayhard… please wait!” the man only paused when he had come closer to his carriage. With a cold look devoid of any emotion, he stared at the huffing man. “I.. are you really the rumored partner of the lord?” When Cedric did not reply, the physician felt restless and continued, “actually, lord used to be rich but he had left nothing for his only daughter in the will. My lord is enraged by this fact and has refused to take Lady Hazel to the palace. She had nowhere to go. She is already suffering from a fever after the accident and now she has been crying for hours. I am afraid that if no one cared for her, she would die.” The physician's voice was full of worry and concern but Cedric’s expression did not change. As if he was talking to a stranger about something meaningless. “So?” was the only word left from his mouth. The physician was speechless. He did not know how to continue. What was he even thinking by following this man? “I.. if it is possible. Can you offer shelter to the girl for a few days? I am sure when she is healthy, she will find a place to live. Or maybe the lord would take her back once his anger would subside. It is just a matter of a few days. If you can take her with you and arrange treatment for her, she will survive.” “... and why would I do that?”
