A New friend

Hazel nodded without a thought, making the man sigh. She was sick, injured, famished yet she said that she was okay? She could not be the girl he had heard about. Shaking his head, he checked her body again and sighed, “you are still sick. Though the fever has gone down, you are too weak to move around freely. You are going to rest for the next five days. Did you get it?” “But what if I was thrown out of the palace for not working enough?” her innocent eyes stared at Caleb in confusion making him speechless. “What do you mean by working, my lady? You are a ward here, not a maid. You should be resting is all i know.” Hazel looked at the man with pity. He didn't understand her condition. Did he? Cedric would not bear her tantrums. Alice would soon come to fetch her. But she did not want to make things difficult for this pitiful man, so she nodded on everything he whispered. “And you must take all the medicines no matter how bitter they are. I will bring candy when you feel better. And you must eat all the fruits and vegetables too and…” Caleb sighed when the girl nodded at everything with an absent look on her face. In the end, he passed her a bowl full of concocted medicine to test her half hearted acceptances. But to his surprise, the girl drank the liquid in a single gulp. He had made it extra bitter to teach her that she should listen to him. But he only looked at her with widened eyes when she placed the empty bowl on the table and looked back at him. “.... very well, now you should rest. I will come later to check you again.” as if someone had put feet on his tail, he ran from there making Hazel frown. “He did not look happy that i have finished medicine after so much nagging!” soon another maid came and placed his breakfast on the table. Before she could think of her and ask where Alice was.. The maid left hurriedly as if Hazel’s sickness was contagious. Hazel shrugged. If she had time to have a meal before working, then she should just eat. Or the physician would come and nag at her again. But even after ending her meal, Alice did not come. Hazel waited for a long time but no one came looking for her. Could it be that Alice had forgotten about her or she was expected to go to the library and work there without being told. With that thought, she stood up again, but did not find anyone around. She did not know where the library was. So after taking a round at the passage and looking at the shocked faces of the maids, she returned to her room with a sigh. The meal was served again but like before the maid did not stop to talk to her. Hazel had only finished her lunch in the silence when the door opened again. And a young boy she had seen yesterday stood there with some wild grass and flowers in his hands. He gritted his teeth the moment his eyes fell on hazel. But when he noticed she was staring at him intently, he forced a smile on his face. “I heard that you are the ward of the state, not a servant here. I apologize for my rude actions yesterday.'' He extended his hands and passed the grass and wildflowers to Hazel. But she only stared at him and then at the strangest bouquet she had ever seen. '`Do you not want to take it?” he scowled at her, “are you going to complain about me that i have left you alone then go ahead. I don't care. I am strong enough to bear my father’s punishment. And i didn ot work here formally, so you could not throw me out.`` Hazel blinked again at the strangest words she had heard after coming here. But her confusion was only taken as her arrogance by the child. “What? Your tongue is too precious that you can not speak to a commoner. Huh? Don't you think you have too much pride even when you have nowhere to go.” He did not insult her. So he regretted the moment words left his mouth. He was just agitated that she did not give him any reaction, no matter what he did. “I did not complain about you and I have nothing to complain about anyone else. You did the right thing by leaving me alone. So you need not worry about it and you need not bring flowers. I am not a noble lady but a commoner like you. So, you need not feel about what you said too.” there were no expressions on her face, so he was not sure if she was just agitated, or she was serious, but it did not matter. Her words made him feel embarrassed. He was not a cruel person to hurt others. He scratched his nape after putting the flowers beside her. So she did not want to take his flowers. He was an i***t for behaving so meanly. “I didn't mean it like that. My lord is a kind man. I am sure you will live a good life here.” ha! That was the first moment he saw some animation on her cold face as her eyes narrowed and filled with hatred. “Your master is a very kind man. I am sure he would take good care of my land, my father’s title. My position and myself.” for some reason, he felt suffocating by standing here, “now, if you are done. Can you tell me why exactly you are here?” “I… I am here to befriend you and apologize to you. Since we have to work together for a long time, we should not fight without a reason. What do you say?”
