Chapter 7

2222 Words
Selena’s POV I was sitting in the living room, trying to read a book, but my mind and heart were filled with thoughts of Theo. When a shadow fell over me. I've been so lost in my thoughts that I can't even sense when somebody is close. I didn't need to look up to know it was Evelyn. Her presence always brought a chill into the house. She didn't greet me. She never did. Instead, she tossed a thick manila envelope onto the coffee table in front of me. "Sign it," she said, her voice clipped and cold. I reached out, my fingers trembling slightly, and slid the papers out. What was written there made my stomach turn. Mutual Divorce Agreement. "What is this?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. I knew it was coming, but seeing it was just heartbreaking. "It’s reality, Selena," Evelyn sneered, crossing her arms over her chest. "I had the lawyers draft an agreement. You gave my son nothing but three wasted years. So, you will leave with nothing. No alimony. No property. You walk out of here exactly as you came penniless orphan. The words struck me like a physical blow. Orphan. It was my deepest insecurity, the nightmare that kept me awake at night. “I'm pretty sure you couldn't wait to do this, right? To finally get rid of me because you never wanted me.” I said with a fake smile on my face, even though my heart was bleeding out. Did Theo make her do this? Does he want to get rid of me that badly? "There's no reason for me to pretend otherwise, and I've always made it clear that you don't deserve my son, and I'm more than happy to finally get rid of you? Sign the papers, Selena. Save yourself the humiliation of being dragged through court." She looked at me with contempt and said. "No," I said, my voice gaining a little strength. “I won't sign anything from you. I married Theo, not his mother. If Theo wants to leave me destitute, he can tell me to my face.” “I don't know who you think you are to even think of telling me what to do! You should sign these papers and set my son free from your curse.” Evelyn’s face turned red, which gave me a sense of satisfaction. Since she wanted to get rid of me, I no longer needed to continue respecting her. I tolerated her just for her son, but now I don't have to. “You know what? I pity you, Evelyn. You must be the most obliviously stupid woman I've ever met. You must be the most foolish, slow-witted woman I've ever met. You and Alpha Michael claim to protect your son, but you control every bit of his life. You like to pretend like you're a happy family out there, and that's why you try to make the lives of everybody around you miserable too, including Theo.” “What the hell are you doing?! I am your Luna-” “Ex Luna. Before I divorced Theo, I was the Luna of the Sirius Pack.” “You-” She opened her mouth to scream at me, but the front door opened. It was Claire. “I hope I'm not interrupting.” Evelyn’s transformation was instant and terrifying. The snarl vanished from her lips and was replaced by a welcoming fake smile. She turned away from me and rushed toward the foyer. "Claire, darling!" She cooed. "Oh, you look magnificent! That color suits you perfectly. I'm delighted you agreed to my invitation and are willing to have dinner with us.” I watched them, feeling a lump form in my throat. Evelyn treated Claire like the daughter she always wanted, while I was just the mistake she couldn't wait to erase. She turned back to me, her eyes flashing a warning while her smile remained fixed for Claire. “Selena, don't just stand there like a statue. Go to the kitchen to prepare tea and snacks for our guests. Serve us in the sunroom.” She looked at me like I was a servant. She wanted to humiliate me in front of the woman replacing me. I looked at Claire, who offered a small, awkward smile, and then back at Evelyn. “I'm sure the maids know their job, Evelyn. I have important matters to discuss with my husband, so I'll be leaving now.” I turned on my heel and walked away before she could say another word, leaving her gasping behind me. I won't let Evelyn get what she wants, at least not until I'm out of here, but there is no way I'm going to tolerate my husband with another woman in front of my eyes. If Evelyn wants to play then game on and I'll do it the best way possible. My hands were shaking as I reached the door of Theo’s study. I took a deep breath, smoothing down my dress and pushed the door open. Theo was sitting at his desk, buried under a mountain of files. He looked exhausted, rubbing his temples, but when he saw me, his shoulders relaxed. "Selena?" he asked. “Is something wrong?” I walked right up to him. I was wearing a soft, knit sweater that hung loosely off one shoulder exposing my neck, and I saw his eyes move there, his pupils dilating. I don't even have to do much to foil Evelyn’s plan because her son is already looking at me with f****** eyes. Theo's gaze made me feel hot all over. I don't know why he wants to divorce me because he married me just to rebel against his father, and now he's just succumbing to his father's demands. What made him change his mind? Was it power? I guess people will go to great lengths to gain power, which Claire brings to the table. "I missed you," I whispered. I moved closer to him and sat on his lap, causing him to groan softly as his d**k was pressed tightly against my butt and it made me horny. I couldn't help but move to get some friction again because it was driving me crazy. He started kissing on my neck and l moaned and he pulled away and leaned in for a kiss. I leaned in too my face inches from his. I could smell his scent and it made my heart ache but l pulled away right before we could kiss. “Your mother's downstairs.” Theo frowned, his hand instinctively coming up to rest on my waist. “Why did she come here?” I know this is what I want from him. For him to keep looking at me like this, because when he's like this, he looks like he cares, but I know he doesn't, and it hurts. "She gave me the new divorce papers," I said, my voice cracking. “She wants me to leave with nothing, because I haven't given you an heir, so she thinks I'm utterly useless. But this isn't my fault. Why must I always endure her insults and curses?” My tears kept flowing more and more. I no longer knew whether it was because of my acting talent or because the injustices I had endured could no longer be suppressed and finally erupted. But as I had hoped, Theo's expression showed anger and... guilt? Theo's grip on my waist tightened, almost to the point of pain. “What did she say?” "She said an orphan like me deserves nothing." I whispered. Theo stood up abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. He gently placed me on his desk and looked at me guiltily. "My mother does not decide on our divorce," he stated, his voice hard with Alpha command andbhe cupped my face in his large, warm hands, forcing me to look at him. “Listen to me, Selena. I would never leave you destitute? The contract stands. Everything we agreed upon. When the days are up, you will receive the deed to the seaside villa in the North. And you will receive the five million dollars. Not a penny less.” I don't know why he thought this was supposed to make me happy because I could have been happy with only him I didn't need the money but of course I'm not enough for him. Nothing will change. But at least this will let Evelyn get a taste of her own medicine, and the best part is that it's going to be coming from her son. "Thank you, Theo." I breathed, resting my forehead against his chest. "I would never abandon you, Selena," he murmured into my hair. “You are my wife.” For a moment, the tension in the room shifted. The anger in his scent faded, replaced by something hotter, heavier. He pulled back slightly, his dark eyes searching mine, and his gaze dropped to my lips. I leaned in, my heart hammering. I wanted him to kiss me. I wanted to forget about the papers and the countdown and just be his. Even for a few minutes. Theo tilted his head, closing the distance, but then the door flew open. “Theodore!” Evelyn stood in the doorway, her face twisted in rage, and Claire stood awkwardly behind her, looking at the floor. "Mom," Theo snarled, stepping in front of me protectively. “Get out.” "How dare you!" Evelyn shrieked, marching into the room. "I asked this girl to serve tea, and instead I find her in here distracting you! Look at you all over each other. It’s pathetic." She pointed a shaking finger at Theo. “Claire has been waiting. You are going to take her to dinner. Now.” Theo ran a hand down his face, looking like he wanted to punch the wall. “Mom, I have work to do.” "I don't care!" Evelyn yelled. “You are the Alpha. Act like it! Stop playing games with your ex-wife and court your future Luna properly.” The room went silent. I saw Theo’s jaw clench. He looked at Claire, who offered a small, apologetic shrug, and then he looked at me. I stood there, wrapping my arms around myself, waiting for him to send me away because I knew that was coming. I don't know why I keep getting heartbroken every time, but I'll do my best for the last 10 days and get what I want because there is nothing left for me here. "Fine," Theo said, his voice cold. “We will go to dinner, but Selena is coming with us.” I froze. I get that some people relish seeing other people sad and miserable, and it turns out that he gets off on my pain because I don't know why he thought it was such a good idea. Evelyn’s smile dropped. “What?” "I said Selena is joining us," Theo repeated, buttoning his jacket. He didn't look at his mother; he looked at me. “Get your coat, Selena.” The restaurant was beautiful, filled with soft candlelight and the murmur of quiet conversations. It should have been romantic. Instead, it felt like a funeral. I don't even know why I came here, but here I was having to watch my husband and his new fiancée. The host led us to a round booth. "Sit next to Claire, Theodore," Evelyn ordered immediately, physically shoving her son toward the far side of the booth. Before I could move, she grabbed my arm. Her nails dug into my skin as she yanked me down into the seat next to her. "You sit here," she hissed in my ear, her voice dripping with malice. “And don't you dare speak.” I watched as Theo poured wine for Claire. He was being polite, asking her questions, and all. He looked so handsome and like a perfect gentleman. I sat there, sipping my ice water, feeling an overwhelming wave of loneliness wash over me. I was sitting at the same table, but I was worlds apart from him. "You're wasting your time," Evelyn muttered under her breath, leaning close to me so no one else could hear. “He doesn't want you. He wants an heir. And you... you’re a burden.” I stiffened, gripping my glass until my knuckles turned white. I wanted to scream at her. I wanted to tell her she was wrong. But I couldn't. My mind flashed back to this morning. The cold bathroom floor. I remembered staring at the little white stick, praying to the Moon Goddess, begging for two lines, but it was one line. Negative. I squeezed my eyes shut, fighting back the tears that threatened to spill over right there in the restaurant. Evelyn was cruel, but she was right about one thing. I wasn't pregnant. Despite the seduction, despite the passion, despite the risks I was taking, nothing. Time was running out. And I was terrified I was going to lose everything. The countdown was reaching the final stretch. There were 10 days left to be a wife. How can I secure my future and get the one thing I wanted more than air?
