The night of Aria Vale’s eighteenth birthday shimmered with promise.
The Silverfang Pack’s grounds glowed under the full moon, its silver light draping the celebration in a dreamlike sheen. Strings of lanterns swayed in the cool night breeze, casting warm colors across the courtyard where wolves and pack families gathered in excitement. Music played softly, children darted between the tables, and the air carried the scent of roasted meat and spiced wine. For most, it was a night of joy, but for Aria, it was the night that would decide her future.
Her wolf stirred beneath her skin, restless and eager. The bond will awaken tonight. The Moon Goddess would reveal her fated mate, the one destined to be her other half, her protector, her eternal partner. She had spent years imagining how it might happen: a sudden spark, a gaze that locked across a crowded room, a pull so powerful it could not be denied. She had dreamed of belonging, of being loved without condition.
Her heart, however, refused to remain calm. It pounded against her ribs as though it too longed to escape. She smoothed her trembling hands over the soft blue fabric of her dress, her mother’s choice for the ceremony. The satin caught the light, clinging to her curves, and for once she almost felt beautiful.
“Don’t look so nervous, Aria,” her best friend whispered with a smile, nudging her arm playfully. “Tonight is your night." You’re glowing. Whoever your mate is, he’ll be lucky.”
Aria forced a smile, but her stomach twisted. “I hope you’re right.”
Her eyes scanned the crowd, drawn again and again to the same figure.
Lucien Blackwood.
The Alpha of Silverfang.
He stood tall and commanding at the far edge of the gathering, surrounded by warriors and elders. Even in stillness, he radiated power. His broad shoulders carried the weight of the pack, his dark hair glistened under the moonlight, and his golden eyes glowed with authority. Conversations hushed when he passed; his presence alone demanded silence.
Aria’s heart stuttered whenever her gaze found him. He was older, stronger, far beyond her reach. She had admired him since she was a child, though she had never dared to hope. Yet tonight, under the Moon Goddess’s gaze, anything was possible.
Her father’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Stand tall, Aria. "Tonight you become a woman in the eyes of the pack." His tone carried more pressure than comfort.
Her mother gave a tight smile. “Remember your manners. Remember your place. Do not embarrass us.”
Aria swallowed, the knot in her chest tightening. She had never felt like enough for them, always the disappointment, the quiet daughter overshadowed by cousins and siblings who excelled. Tonight, she prayed she would prove them wrong.
The Elder stepped into the center of the courtyard, his long white robes glinting beneath the moon. He raised his arms, and the pack fell silent. His voice boomed with ceremony.
“Tonight, we gather under the light of the Moon Goddess. Tonight, bonds shall be revealed, mates united, fates sealed. Each young wolf should step forward and discover the one chosen for them.”
A cheer rose through the crowd. Excitement surged. Wolves whispered, lovers clutched hands, and friends exchanged eager glances.
Aria’s breath came faster. Her wolf howled within her, pressing against her chest, urging her toward destiny.
One by one, names were called. Couples formed, tears and laughter mingling as the Goddess revealed her choices. A girl squealed when her mate was named, another fainted with joy. Some cried in heartbreak when no bond was found.
Aria’s hands trembled. Each moment stretched longer, heavier, until finally.
“Aria Vale.”
Her name rang out, clear and sharp.
Her knees nearly gave way. Heat rushed through her, and every eye turned to her. Whispers rippled through the pack as she stepped forward into the circle, her pulse thundering.
She lifted her chin, forcing her spine straight, though inside she quaked. The scents of the pack swirled around her, but one rose above them all. Smoke and pine, intoxicating, fierce. Her wolf snapped to attention, claws scratching at her soul.
Her gaze locked on Lucien.
He stood at the edge of the circle, golden eyes searing into hers. The world narrowed until there was nothing but him. Her body trembled, recognition flooding her veins. The pull between them was undeniable, a tether snapping into place, wrapping around her heart.
Her lips parted, trembling. “It’s you,” she whispered. “You’re my mate.”
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Some wolves smiled, others whispered in shock. The idea was unthinkable. An Alpha and the daughter of a weak family?
Lucien stepped forward, the crowd parting for him like water around stone. Each movement was deliberate, heavy with command. For one fragile, shining heartbeat, Aria thought the Goddess had blessed her beyond measure.
Then his voice cut the night like a blade.
“No.”
The word shattered her.
Aria blinked, her breath catching. “What?”
Lucien’s eyes burned with fury, not warmth. “I reject you, Aria Vale.”
The crowd erupted. Gasps, whispers, laughter. Harsh and cruel. Aria staggered back, her wolf howling in agony. “No… you can’t. The bond. It’s real. I feel it.”
Lucien’s lip curled in disgust. “You think the Moon Goddess would curse me with you? You are weak. You will never stand as Luna beside me.”
The words slashed deeper than claws. Aria’s heart cracked, her chest hollowing. “Lucien, please. ”
He stepped closer, towering over her, his golden eyes hard. “You mean nothing to me. I reject you completely. I will never accept you.”
The declaration echoed across the courtyard, final and merciless.
Her wolf whimpered, tearing inside her. Pain ripped through her veins, burning, breaking, leaving her empty.
The pack’s whispers sharpened.
Rejected.
Unworthy.
Shameful.
Aria’s knees buckled. She clutched her chest, gasping, but the pain only grew. Her wrist seared, light bursting beneath her skin. A crescent-shaped mark glowed, spreading fire through her arm, branding her with rejection.
Her vision blurred. The world tilted.
The last thing she saw was Lucien’s cold, unyielding eyes before the darkness swallowed her.
