Chapter 3 Personal Kindness

1199 Words
The lights upstairs gradually dimmed, outlining the silhouette of a man. Downstairs, the lights were bright, reflecting on the hem of a woman's dress. It was as if an invisible red thread was pulling between the two. "It is that young master from the Hillton family who has arrived." "Is the Lyons family going to marry into the Hillton family?" Kylie was very pleased to hear the whispers of others. She must get Nathan! Kevin hurried to Kylie. "Why is it so noisy? What are you doing?" "Brother, it's not my fault!" Kylie pointed at Zelia. "I was kind enough to help Miss Smith, but she didn't appreciate it." Sherry sneered, "You call that helping?" The atmosphere between Kylie and Zelia was tense. Kevin naturally didn't want his family to lose face here. "Miss Smith, this ship won't be docking tonight." He seemed polite, but he was putting pressure on her. "You drink this glass of wine, and Kylie and I will treat this as if it never happened. How about that?" The implication was that if the ship wasn't sailing, he would have asked Zelia to leave immediately. Everyone started watching the drama, some sarcastic and some mocking. It was indeed a rare sight to see the former eldest daughter of the Smith family being forced to drink. Zelia had never been one to submit to adversity. Looking at the wine in front of her, she was thinking about whether to just splash it on the faces of Kylie and Kevin when Nathan, surrounded by a crowd, arrived at the center of the banquet hall. Zelia, whose heart was in turmoil, suddenly did something unexpected. She took the glass and ran to the center of the banquet hall. "They insisted that I drink this wine, so please help me drink it." Nathan looked down at the champagne-filled glass and the woman in front of him. The woman was wearing a dark green fishtail dress, silk threads scattered on her shoulders like satin, looking at him with those seductive big eyes. Where others couldn't see, the woman's slender fingers were pulling at his sleeve. Nathan was all too familiar with her posture. That night, when she begged him to let her go, she always put on such a pitiful and moving look, only then it was accompanied by sobs... The man lowered his eyes to look at the woman's delicate face and thought of the things his grandfather had sent him a few days ago. He made a decision immediately. The next moment, under the shocked gazes of everyone, Nathan took the glass. "I've had quite a bit to drink tonight and I'm feeling a little dizzy. What do you think, Mr. Lyons?" No one expected Nathan to take the glass from Zelia's hand, nor did they expect him to make such a move. He was obviously trying to protect Miss Smith. No matter what his thoughts were before, at this moment Kevin knew that he must not offend this member of the Hillton family. He quickly put on a smiling face and said, "You're right, Mr. Hillton. This wine has a strong aftertaste. It's not advisable to drink too much." "Brother, but..." Kylie still wanted to retort with a look of disbelief on her face. But when Nathan glanced at her, Kylie didn't dare to finish her sentence. The man's aura was too strong. Kevin glared at Kylie, hating that she was useless. His sister was simply stupid. If she wanted to pressure Zelia earlier, that was fine. With the Smith family's fall, it wouldn't have much impact if she wanted to show off. But now, he didn't expect Zelia to be able to gain the favor of Nathan. Now anyone could see that Mr. Hillton and Zelia were close. Zelia must not be offended! The farce ended, and Nathan had no intention of putting on a show in front of everyone. He casually put his arm around Zelia's waist, his intention obvious. He wanted the woman to go with him. Since the play had gone this far, Zelia could only follow Nathan to his lounge. "Miss Smith owes me a favor," Nathan's tone was flat and calm as if he was negotiating with her. No wonder! Could he please remove the hand on her waist first? Whoever said that Nathan never went near women and was detached must be mistaken! After that night, she knew that this man was far too close to women. She almost couldn't get out of bed the next day. Zelia pulled the man's hand away and raised her eyebrows. "How does Mr. Hillton want me to repay you?" The man was thrown off and chuckled, but didn't say anything. He sat down opposite her calmly and looked at the woman who was still standing. His eyes motioned for her to sit down. Zelia was unsure of the man's intentions and stared warily at Nathan like a wary feline. But she was the kind of precious creature that had been pampered in a greenhouse. Even being scratched, a wolf that fought in the wild would hardly feel it, instead, it would find it quite interesting. "Miss Smith, will you marry me?" "What?" Zelia exclaimed in a low voice. "Will you marry me?" Nathan didn't seem to think that his words were a bombshell, nor did he care how surprised Zelia was. He repeated his words very patiently. Zelia's mind was a little confused as she tried to understand what Nathan had just meant. She admitted that she had a purpose in coming to this banquet today. What Sherry had said before did make her want to talk to this man again. But she only wanted Nathan to help her deal with some unreasonable suitors, such as those young masters from the Chandler and Royal families. And just now, in front of everyone, she had asked Nathan to help her drink because she wanted to test his attitude towards her. Obviously, she had guessed right. For whatever reason, this man was interested in her. That was enough. As long as Nathan was interested in her, she would have the opportunity to negotiate with him. She hadn't even spoken yet, and the other side had thrown a bombshell at her. Zelia didn't understand. After a moment of silence, she asked, "Why do you want to marry me?" It couldn't be love at first sight. Zelia never belittled herself, but she never thought too highly of herself either. She knew very well that Nathan was interested in her, but it had nothing to do with love. Nathan's voice was cold and calm, "I need a wife, and you're perfect." Perfect? Perfect for what? Sleeping together? Zelia's first reaction was this. She lowered her eyelids and laughed self-deprecatingly as if she didn't care. Who would have thought that one day she would be chosen for such a vulgar reason? "I don't…" "Take a look at this first," Nathan interrupted Zelia, his fingers tapping lightly on the table. Only then did Zelia notice the old, yellowed piece of paper on the table in front of her. Unfolding it, the words on it completely muddled Zelia's already chaotic thoughts.
