The key felt heavier than it should have.
Isabella stood outside Luca’s study long after the door closed behind her.
Her palm still burned from where his fingers had held her.
Firm.
Unyielding.
Possessive.
“You are mine.”
The words wouldn’t stop echoing.
Not shouted.
Not demanded.
Stated.
And that was what made them dangerous.
She made it halfway down the corridor before she heard his footsteps behind her.
Measured.
Unhurried.
He wasn’t chasing her.
He knew she wouldn’t run.
“Isabella.”
Her name in his voice did something unsettling to her spine.
She didn’t turn immediately.
That would look weak.
“You’re trembling,” he said quietly.
“I’m not.”
He stepped closer.
Close enough that the warmth of his body brushed her back.
“You are.”
His hand came up, not to grab her , but to slide slowly over her arm.
Testing.
Feeling.
Her breath stuttered despite herself.
She hated that he could read her body so easily.
“You’re angry,” she said.
“No.”
His fingers traced upward, stopping at her shoulder.
“I’m deciding.”
That was worse.
She turned then.
And the look in his eyes stole the air from her lungs.
Not rage.
Not coldness.
Something darker.
Claim.
“You don’t get to decide things about me,” she said.
His jaw tightened slightly.
“Everything about you affects me.”
“That’s not ownership.”
“It is in my world.”
“And I didn’t choose your world.”
“No,” he agreed, stepping closer.
Until her back met the wall.
“But you chose me.”
The truth of that hit harder than anything else tonight.
She had chosen him.
Over safety.
Over simplicity.
Over peace.
“I don’t regret that,” she whispered.
His gaze dropped to her mouth.
Slowly.
Intentionally.
“Good.”
He lifted a hand and placed it beside her head, caging her in without fully touching her.
Dominance without force.
His body leaned closer.
Not crushing.
Just enough to make her hyperaware of him.
“Do you know what it feels like,” he murmured, “to watch another man look at you like he has a right?”
Her pulse thudded violently.
“He doesn’t.”
“I know.”
His eyes darkened.
“But he thinks he does.”
The air between them shifted.
Thick.
Electric.
“You were jealous,” she breathed.
His lips curved slightly.
“Territorial.”
The word sent heat down her spine.
“You don’t own me.”
“No.”
His hand slid from the wall to her waist.
Slow.
Confident.
“But I will protect what’s mine.”
Her body reacted before her pride could stop it.
Her fingers curled lightly into his jacket.
Not pushing him away.
Holding him there.
His gaze flickered down to that small betrayal.
And something in him sharpened.
“Say it,” he said quietly.
“Say what?”
“That you felt it too.”
Her throat tightened.
She could lie.
She could pull away.
She could regain control.
But she didn’t.
“I felt it,” she admitted softly.
The words changed something.
His hand tightened slightly at her waist.
Not hurting.
Claiming.
“You looked at him,” Luca said, voice dropping lower, “but your body leaned toward me.”
Her cheeks flushed.
“That’s not true.”
“It is.”
He stepped closer.
Close enough that their foreheads nearly touched.
“You don’t even realize you do it.”
His thumb brushed along her hip, slow and deliberate.
“You choose me with your body before your mind catches up.”
Her breathing grew uneven.
“You’re arrogant.”
“I’m observant.”
The tension was unbearable now.
The kind that doesn’t explode.
It burns.
Slow.
Consuming.
“You’re trying to control this,” she whispered.
“I am controlling it.”
His fingers slid upward along her side, stopping just beneath her ribs.
Every movement deliberate.
Every inch calculated.
“Because if I don’t,” he continued, “I’ll stop being careful.”
Her heart skipped.
“Careful about what?”
His eyes locked on hers.
“About how much of myself I give you.”
That wasn’t the answer she expected.
The dominance softened.
Just slightly.
Revealing something raw beneath it.
“You think this is easy for me?” he murmured.
“You think I let people this close?”
Her fingers tightened on his jacket.
“No.”
“I don’t.”
His hand came up, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face.
Not rough.
Not commanding.
Intimate.
And that was more dangerous than any grip.
“I don’t touch what I don’t intend to keep,” he said quietly.
Her breath left her in a slow exhale.
The words settled between them.
Heavy.
Real.
She should step away.
She should create distance.
Instead,
She moved closer.
Deliberately.
Testing him.
Her hands slid up his chest.
Over the hard line of muscle beneath his shirt.
She felt the tension there.
The restraint.
“You talk about control,” she whispered. “But you’re the one holding back.”
His jaw flexed.
“You don’t know what you’re asking for.”
“Then show me.”
Silence.
A dangerous silence.
Then suddenly,
He moved.
Not violently.
But decisively.
He lifted her effortlessly, placing her on the edge of the nearby console table.
The shift in height changed everything.
Now he stood between her knees.
Dominant.
Commanding.
His hands braced on either side of her thighs.
Not touching more than necessary.
But close enough to make her pulse roar in her ears.
“You want fire?” he asked softly.
“Yes.”
His gaze burned.
“Then don’t mistake it for something gentle.”
His hand slid slowly up her thigh — stopping just before it became too much.
Testing her reaction.
Her breath hitched sharply.
He noticed.
Of course he did.
“You don’t pull away,” he murmured.
“You don’t give me a reason to.”
His lips hovered near her ear.
Not touching.
Just close enough for warmth to brush her skin.
“I could ruin you for anyone else.”
The words were dark.
Possessive.
Dangerous.
Her fingers dug into his shoulders.
“Maybe I don’t want anyone else.”
That did it.
The last thread of restraint snapped.
He kissed her.
Not soft.
Not rushed.
Deep.
Claiming.
His hand tightened at her waist as if anchoring her there.
Her body arched toward him instinctively.
Heat flooded through her veins.
It wasn’t sweet.
It wasn’t gentle.
It was consuming.
A slow burn finally catching flame.
When he pulled back, her lips felt swollen.
Her breathing uneven.
His forehead rested against hers.
“If you walk into that archive tomorrow,” he said roughly, “you walk in knowing this.”
“Knowing what?”
“That whatever you find”
His thumb brushed over her lower lip.
Possessive.
Intent.
“you still belong with me.”
Not owned.
Not trapped.
But chosen.
Claimed.
Burning.
She looked into his dark eyes.
And for the first time
She didn’t see danger.
She saw inevitability.
