A Date- Abby

It's been two days and I haven't been called to Dr. Dey's office. For many, it might be nothing, but for me, it was a great achievement. The fact that he had a lot of patients these past two days was also an advantage. The only thing good about him was his passion as a doctor. He was genuinely good at what he did, not that I am ever going to tell him that. Once or twice when I passed his cabin, I saw him talking kindly and gently to the pregnant women. Seeing him like this reminded me of the Trevor I knew and grew up with. The soft smiles, the full-blown grins, the carefree look on his face, the care he portrayed. Everything that was gone from him. The few times those emotions came out, they vanished as soon as his eyes met mine. The hatred in those eyes, the anger, everything reminds me of how I ruined him. How I ruined him for everyone. . . . Although Trevor was busy, that didn't mean that all my problems were gone. Nope, God doesn't show that much mercy on me anymore. Three days later, on Saturday, I have to attend a gala my dad is hosting. He hosts one every year, to celebrate his partnership with King Corporation. Yup, heard it right, King Corporation, Trevor's dad's company. My dad deals with technology or something, while Trevor's dad deals with something related to technology too. I have never paid much heed to it. These two companies used to be rivals. Me and Trevor being best friends made our parents come together and seal a deal between themselves. Which means that he would be there too. Just my luck. On top, my parents keep on teasing me and Trevor, about us being together. I don't know how they don't get the hint that we hate each other. We have been hostile towards each other for years, which our parents disregard as friendly banter. Talk about being oblivious. My thoughts were fortunately interrupted by a call. Although, the caller ID did not make me feel much fortunate. It was my mom. "Hello, Liz. How are you?" Always the same start. Unfortunately, I know what she wants to talk about. "I am good Ma, how are you, and dad and V," I ask her with a small smile remembering V. V is my younger brother. He's still in high school, and he is nothing like those annoying brothers. He is always sweet to me. It's the age gap I think. "We are all good. I wanted to talk to you about the gala." There she goes. I love my mother, she is the sweetest woman, but she sure as hell can be stubborn at times. "You have to bring a date with you or we will get you one." . . . "It doesn't feel right," I told May. "Yes, and you have told me that a hundred times already," She remarked back. "Well I wouldn't be repeating myself if you would say something constructive," I mumbled out, being offended now. May let out a long sigh and tugged my arm. She took me to the cafeteria and sat me down, taking up the opposite side. "What do you want me to say? Huh?" She asks me and then starts speaking without letting me say something. "Look, I know that you have been enemies for almost a decade now. And it feels weird that he isn't sneering at you or glaring at you. But that's good. That means no more fights, which in turn means your position in this hospital is secured. I don't get why you are upset that your daily brawls are over." She said, which made me take a moment to think. She patted my shoulder and left, giving me some time to myself. Why am I upset that our fights have stopped? Why am I not happy that I don't have to see his face every day? Because I had grown accustomed to the lifestyle where he played a big role. Damn!!!! I knew I was a bit toxic, but now I have an affinity for toxicity. My life cannot get any better. . . . Now that I noticed it, it wasn't only the fact that I was accustomed to our fights that made me feel uneasy. No. There was something wrong. I wasn't being paranoid. I have known Trevor since we were five. We were best friends. Me, him, and May. So I know that the way he is behaving is not normal. Trevor has extreme anger issues and can be very sadistic at times. So him just letting it go, is not something that sits well with me. He would intentionally avoid me, walk in the other direction whenever he saw me, and didn't even acknowledge my presence. I can't talk to May, because she thinks I am having abandonment issues. Really May? These psychiatrists really turn all your normal issues into mental issues. "You ready?" May asked me, breaking me out of my thoughts. "For what?" I asked back, not sure what May was talking about. Trevor ignoring me has really got into my head, making me think about it and zoning out on random occasions. "Your date, duh!" May replied while walking away, not waiting for an answer. Oh, that. I really want to forget that. The ball is tomorrow and I still don't have a date. So my mother arranged one for me. I feel like a child whose mother arranged her a play date. I am meeting him at a cafe nearby. Apparently, he is a doctor too, so that's good, I guess. . . .
