Chapter 1 — The Day It Rained Again
Rain had always been a witness to Anaya’s memories.
Not just ordinary memories — but the kind that lived deep in her heart, untouched by time. The laughter that once filled her evenings, the promises whispered under cloudy skies, and the heartbreak she never truly healed from.
Two years ago, everything changed.
The man she loved, Arjun, disappeared from her life without explanation.
No goodbye.
No fight.
No warning.
One day he was there… and the next day he was simply gone.
At first, she waited.
She told herself he would call. He would text. He would come back with some reasonable explanation that would make everything normal again.
Days turned into weeks. Weeks into months.
Silence became the only answer she received.
That silence broke her more than any harsh truth ever could.
Even now, after two years, certain things still reminded her of him — the smell of wet soil after rain, the sound of distant thunder, the soft melody of old songs he used to hum absentmindedly.
And rain…
Rain reminded her the most.
Because rain was where their story had begun.
That evening, dark clouds gathered again over the quiet town.
The monsoon had arrived early this year, bringing with it heavy winds and a sky painted in shades of grey. People rushed along the streets, trying to reach home before the downpour began.
Anaya stood near the window of her small café, watching the world blur behind falling droplets.
She had built this place herself after Arjun left.
At first, it was only a distraction — something to keep her mind busy so she wouldn’t drown in memories. But slowly, the café became her safe space. A place where she could breathe without constantly feeling the absence of someone.
The soft aroma of coffee filled the air. Warm lights reflected on the wooden tables. Outside, thunder rumbled low in the distance.
“Looks like heavy rain,” her coworker Maya said, tying her apron.
Anaya nodded slightly. “Yeah… it does.”
But her mind wasn’t on the weather.
It was on the strange ache forming in her chest — the kind that came without warning, like a memory trying to surface.
Moments later, the sky opened.
Rain poured down in thick silver sheets, hitting the roads, rooftops, and trees with unstoppable force.
Customers rushed inside the café to escape the storm, shaking water from umbrellas and laughing nervously about getting drenched.
Anaya moved behind the counter, preparing orders automatically. Her hands worked from habit, but her thoughts were far away.
Rain always did this to her.
It pulled her backward in time.
Back to the evenings when she and Arjun would walk without umbrellas just to feel the rain on their faces. Back to the promises he made — promises about forever, about building a life together, about never leaving her side.
A bitter smile touched her lips.
Forever had lasted only three years.
An hour passed. The rain showed no sign of stopping.
By closing time, the streets were nearly empty.
Maya waved goodbye and ran toward her scooter, covering her head with a bag. Anaya locked the café door and stepped outside, holding her umbrella tightly against the wind.
The air smelled fresh — wet earth, leaves, and something strangely familiar.
She began walking toward home.
Water flowed along the sides of the road, reflecting streetlights like broken pieces of gold. The sound of rain hitting her umbrella created a steady rhythm — almost calming.
Almost.
As she reached the old bus stop near the corner, she slowed down.
That place held memories too.
It was where Arjun used to wait for her after work, leaning casually against the metal pole, smiling the moment he saw her.
For a second, her heart squeezed painfully.
Don’t think about it, she told herself.
But fate had other plans.
Because at that exact moment…
Someone stepped into the faint streetlight ahead.
Tall. Familiar. Still.
Her breath stopped.
No…
It couldn’t be.
But when the man lifted his head slightly, the light fell across his face.
And the world around her disappeared.
Arjun.
Two years of silence… standing right in front of her.
Her fingers tightened around the umbrella handle. Her heart began pounding so loudly she was sure he could hear it.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Rain fell between them like a curtain made of memories.
Arjun looked different — thinner, more tired, his eyes carrying a heaviness she had never seen before. But it was still him. The same person she had loved with her entire heart.
Shock froze her in place.
Then emotions crashed over her all at once.
Anger.
Pain.
Longing.
Confusion.
And love…
The love she had tried so hard to bury.
His lips parted slightly, as if searching for words.
“Anaya…”
Her name sounded the same.
Soft. Familiar. Dangerous.
Something inside her broke.
Before he could say anything more, she spoke — her voice trembling despite her effort to stay strong.
“Why are you here?”
The question carried two years of unanswered pain.
Arjun swallowed hard. Rain soaked his shoulders, but he didn’t seem to notice.
“I… I need to talk to you.”
A bitter laugh escaped her.
“Now?” she said. “After two years?”
Guilt flashed across his face.
And in that moment, Anaya realized something terrifying.
Seeing him again didn’t erase her love.
It proved it had never left.
The rain continued to fall around them, as if the sky itself was holding its breath.
Because sometimes promises don’t break…
They simply wait for the right moment to be fulfilled.
And this moment had finally arrived.
