My parents had mysteriously come up to my school to check up on me while on the trail of some clue. I pulled my father aside while mom and Kera spoke to Kwen.
"Pops, what's going on?"
I asked. My father looked to be in deep in thought as he brows furrowed.
"We have a situation. Hillside's pack was just attacked a few days ago. The injured is constantly accumulating, and the number of dead rises as well."
I was shocked.
"How the hell did that happen? That place is like a fortress?"
"I dont know, truthfully. All I know is that Barrett went ahead and has reported that the amount of damage is astronomical."
I nodded as I listened, but something was bugging me.
"Ok... so why were you or mom or both of you needed for this?"
He said nothing for a second before responding.
"Barrett suspected magic, and Alpha Reggie's son, Desmond, confirmed it."
"WHAT!"
I had to control my volume. I almost forgot that we were in a library surrounded by humans.
"Calm down, son. I know. We haven't had an attack like this, using magic in almost a century."
"Yeah. Do they know which coven it was?"
I asked, concerned. My father gave me a serious look.
"What?"
I questioned.
"This wasn't witches... they were warlocks."
It felt as if my stomach fell from my body.
"You're kidding."
"Not at all. Desmond fought them face to face, and the one who killed his father got away. This is bad, Cersai."
I was too stunned to speak.
...
Later that night...
After I finally went off to dreamland after speaking with Kwen and making plans for a training session for Saturday, when my mother and father ran into my room, waking me up.
"CERSAI! GET UP!!"
I jumped outta bed, ready to attack. My nails grew longer, and my eyes changed to those of my wolf's.
"We gotta go! There's an attack on the Redmoon Pack."
I calmed down once I realized who I was speaking to.
"They're only about an hour away from here."
I told my dad.
"Yeah, I know. Get dressed. Be down in 5."
I nodded and rushed to dress. I was on my way out the door when I looked back at my phone. I rushed back over and left a short text to Kwen, letting her know that we'd have to reschedule our meet-up tomorrow for school and Saturday. Knowing how things work, I'll be busy the rest of the week. It was almost 3 in the morning, so I know she'd still be sleeping. I left my phone and headed towards the door. We couldn't just run because we were in human society, so we had no choice but to drive there.
Once we arrived, I was shocked, to say the least. Buildings were destroyed, warriors were laid out on the ground as the warriors that were unharmed or the least hurt, continued to patrol and gather their brethren. I walked in behind my father into their packhouse, where we found the alpha of the pack, along with his son, daughter, and mate. The alpha noticed us immediately and pushed the doctor aside to stand in my father's presence. My dad raised a hand.
"Come now. Be seated and allow your doctors to help you."
The alpha nodded.
"Thank you, my King."
We all took a seat as people were being bandaged up around us.
"What happened here, Alpha Xavier?"
My father asked. The alpha shook his head in stress and defeat.
"We don't know. It was a sneak attack. No one knows how they got passed our patrols, but as soon as they did, they began destroying everything. We fought as hard as we could, but it seemed like nothing we did was good enough. Worst part is, they were..."
"Warlocks."
My father finished the alpha's sentence, and his head snapped up in suprise.
"How? How did you know?"
The alpha asked.
"Recently, we received a report of Hillside being attacked. Only there, their alpha did not survive. His son, Desmond, told us who attacked them. We came down today to check on the damage. It's about 2 hours from my son's school, so 3 hours from here. My commander, Barrett, began going to nearby packs to see if he could spot any or be told of sightings of warlocks. He was coming here when he saw what was happening and let me know right away."
My father spoke. That's when the double doors of the room we were in flew opened. Barrett strolled in and made his way to my father, kneeling.
"Hello, my king."
My father smirked and rolled his eyes.
"It's too early for your theatrics, Barrett."
He stood and had a smirk on his face.
"I had no idea you were here, Commander Barrett."
The alpha said. Barrett looked his way and nodded.
"Yes, I know. Apologies. Once I saw what was happening, I alerted my alpha and jumped into the fight. One of my many duties is to collect evidence. Though I found no traces left behind, I did manage to get a good look at one of the warlocks that got away."
Barrett said as his slammed a piece of paper on the table. He's always been a great artist as well as a commander. He drew one of the warlocks' faces.
"No apologies needed. Thank you."
The alpha said. Barrett nodded his thanks.
"Who is this?"
My father asked. He picked the paper up, studied it, then passed it to the alpha.
"He was the ring leader and the most powerful one of them all. His little henchmen made sure he could get away."
Barrett said.
"I remember seeing him as well."
The alpha's son spoke up. We all looked towards him.
"He tried to come for my father and kill him, but he didn't see me coming."
He took the drawing from his father and frowned.
"Yeah, that's him."
His eyes flashed silver before sliding the paper back over to my father.
End of flashback.
Back to the present...
Since then, I've been called home a lot to work on this situation. My father has been teaching me more and more about his role and what it means to be king. Frankly, I dont know like where this is going. I'll be 21 this year and haven't yet met my mate. I was hoping it would be Kwen since she turned 18 a couple of months back. To my dismay, it wasn't, and that solidified me never being anything more than friends with her. Especially with all the craziness happening now. I couldn't put her in danger like that, especially if she wasn't even meant for me. My reasoning didn't lessen my like for her. I smile when she pops in my head, and I get butterflies, and my body heats up when I hear her voice now. Reign, my wolf, purrs when he hears her voice and prances around when we see her. Granted, I've been able to see her less and less. The last time was right after finals. She's been filling out more and more over the year, and her baggy clothes ain't hiding her body the way it used to. With everything going on, my father has been pushing me to go out more and visit other packs in hopes of finding my mate. I know I should, but in the back of my mind, I'm still holding out hope for Kwen. My... rendezvous has been limited because I'm so busy, but mainly because I know none of them are who I actually want. Reign and I have spoken a ton about what we feel, and we've come to the conclusion that we aren't mates, but we definitely have strong feelings for Kwen. When each party turns 18, they immediately recognize each other. I prayed to the goddess for that to happen with Kwen and I, but it didn't. I should've known better. As amazing as she is, the goddess can't put a human with the next Alpha King. Kera, Royce, and James can tell clear as day that I really like her, but they understand why I hesitate. If I was to ever cross that line with her, there would be no going back. In a way, all this drama has been good for me. I've been able to keep my feelings in check the less time I spend around her.
Anyway, I'm headed for my father's office. He said he needed to speak with me about something. I get to his door and knock.
"Come in."
I walked in and found him sitting behind his desk, rummaging through documents, closing his laptop. He gestured for me to have a seat, and I took one. My dad looked me square in the eyes, took a deep breath, sighing heavily.
"You need to pick a mate."
