# Chapter Nine: Echoes of the Past
Days passed in the Shadow Kingdom.
Or perhaps weeks.
Evelyn had stopped trying to count.
Time flowed differently here, like a river with no beginning or end.
Every day followed the same rhythm.
Training.
Study.
Silence.
At first, she had hated it.
Now...
She found comfort in the routine.
She woke before Nyx arrived at the training grounds, practicing the sword forms she had unknowingly mastered. Though she still made mistakes, each movement felt more natural than the last.
One morning, after another exhausting session, Nyx lowered her sword.
"You're improving."
Evelyn blinked.
It was the first compliment Nyx had ever given her.
A smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
"I was beginning to think you didn't know how to say anything nice."
Nyx raised an eyebrow.
"Don't get used to it."
Evelyn laughed.
The sound echoed through the empty arena.
For a moment...
It didn't feel like a forgotten kingdom anymore.
...
Later that day, Nyx led Evelyn into a vast library hidden beneath the palace.
Shelves stretched farther than the eye could see.
Ancient books lined every wall.
Some were wrapped in chains.
Others glowed with faint silver light.
The scent of old parchment filled the air.
"What is this place?"
"The Hall of Records."
"It contains the history of every Shadow Queen."
Evelyn's eyes widened.
"So... all the answers are here?"
Nyx smiled faintly.
"No."
"Only the questions."
Evelyn frowned.
"I don't understand."
"History is rarely complete."
"Sometimes..."
"The truth is hidden between the lines."
Nyx reached for an old leather-bound book and placed it in Evelyn's hands.
Dust rose as she opened it.
Inside were beautiful sketches of queens who had ruled long before her.
Each page told a story.
Some ruled for decades.
Others for only a few years.
One queen united rival kingdoms.
Another ended a terrible war.
One vanished without a trace.
Evelyn paused.
Every portrait had something in common.
Around each queen's neck hung the same crescent-shaped pendant.
She touched her own neck instinctively.
There was nothing there.
"What does the pendant mean?"
Nyx looked at the drawing.
"It is called the Moon's Promise."
"Every Shadow Queen once carried it."
"Where is it now?"
Nyx's gaze drifted toward the towering windows.
"It was lost."
Evelyn closed the book carefully.
"Do you think it can be found?"
"I believe..."
Nyx said quietly,
"...it has been waiting."
...
That evening, Evelyn returned alone to the Garden of Forgotten Queens.
She found herself standing beneath the Memory Tree once more.
The silver leaves swayed gently despite the still air.
"You again."
She smiled to herself.
"I don't know why I keep coming here."
A leaf drifted down.
She caught it in her palm.
"I wish you could answer."
The wind suddenly stirred.
Not strong.
Just enough to make the branches whisper.
Evelyn looked up.
For a heartbeat...
She thought she saw figures standing beneath the tree.
Women.
Watching her.
Proud.
Then they were gone.
She closed her eyes.
"I won't disappoint you."
The garden fell silent once more.
...
Elsewhere...
Far beyond the palace...
Nyx stood alone at the edge of a cliff overlooking the endless kingdom.
She wasn't alone for long.
Footsteps approached behind her.
A tall figure emerged from the shadows.
His face remained hidden beneath a dark hood.
"You've started preparing her."
Nyx didn't turn.
"I have."
"Is it too soon?"
"No."
"And if she remembers everything?"
Nyx was quiet for a long moment.
"Then history will have another chance."
The hooded figure sighed.
"I fear history may repeat itself."
"So do I."
...
That night...
Evelyn dreamed.
She stood in a field of silver flowers beneath a crimson moon.
Someone stood with their back to her.
A woman wearing black armor.
Long dark hair flowed behind her.
Without turning around, the woman spoke.
"When the truth comes..."
"...don't let your heart choose for you."
Evelyn took a step forward.
"Who are you?"
The woman slowly began to turn.
Just before Evelyn could see her face...
She woke.
Her breathing was uneven.
The dream felt real.
Too real.
Outside her window...
The silver leaves of the Memory Tree rustled softly.
As though someone...
Or something...
Was watching over her.
