Chapter Seven: A Queen Never Kneels

828 Words
The silence of the Shadow Kingdom no longer frightened Evelyn. It had become familiar. Every morning—if mornings even existed in this timeless realm—she woke to the sound of steel meeting steel. Every day ended the same way. Bruises. Exhaustion. Failure. Nyx never praised her. Never comforted her. Never said she was improving. Only one word ever left her lips. "Again." ... Evelyn swung her sword. Nyx blocked it effortlessly. The impact sent a sharp vibration through Evelyn's arms. She gritted her teeth and attacked again. Left. Right. Forward. Spin. Every strike was met with calm precision. Finally... Nyx twisted her wrist. The sword flew from Evelyn's hands and slid across the obsidian floor. Evelyn fell to one knee, breathing heavily. "I'm getting worse." "No." Nyx walked toward the fallen blade. "You are becoming impatient." She picked up the sword. "A Queen who loses patience..." "...loses her kingdom." Evelyn lowered her head. "I'm trying." "I know." "Then why does it feel like I'm standing still?" Nyx looked at her for a long moment. "Tell me..." "If I opened a gate to the mortal world right now..." "...what would you do?" The answer came instantly. "I'd kill Selene." Nyx's expression didn't change. "And after that?" Evelyn hesitated. "I..." "And after your revenge?" Silence. She had never thought that far. Nyx gently placed the sword back into Evelyn's hands. "That is why you are not ready." "A Queen who lives only for revenge..." "...will have nothing left when revenge is complete." Those words lingered in Evelyn's mind. Who would she become... ...after justice was served? ... Later that day... Evelyn wandered alone through the ancient halls of the Shadow Palace. Unlike the training arena, this place felt alive. Massive portraits lined the walls. Each one depicted a woman wearing the same black crown. Some smiled. Some looked stern. Others carried swords stained with blood. Evelyn stopped before one portrait. The woman looked... Familiar. Long black hair. Golden eyes. A gentle smile. She reached out to touch the painting. The moment her fingertips brushed the frame... A whisper echoed through the hallway. "You finally came back." Evelyn quickly turned. No one was there. Only silence. She frowned. "Who's there?" Nothing. She looked back at the portrait. The woman's smile... Seemed different. Almost... Warmer. "I'm imagining things." "You're not." Nyx's voice came from behind. Evelyn spun around. "You heard that?" Nyx nodded once. "The palace remembers its Queens." "What does that mean?" Instead of answering... Nyx looked toward the portrait. "Do you know why there are only women in these paintings?" Evelyn shook her head. "No." "Because the Shadow Crown has never chosen a king." "It chooses only one ruler." "A Queen." Evelyn glanced back at the portraits. "How many were there?" Nyx's gaze darkened. "Too few." "And what happened to them?" "They gave everything to protect this kingdom." Evelyn noticed the sadness hidden beneath Nyx's calm voice. For the first time... She realized Nyx wasn't simply her teacher. She had lost people too. "Did you know them?" Nyx smiled faintly. "I knew every single one." Before Evelyn could ask another question... A loud bell echoed through the palace. Once. Twice. Three times. Nyx's expression immediately became serious. "It's time." "For what?" Without answering, Nyx turned and walked toward a pair of enormous doors at the end of the corridor. Evelyn followed. The doors slowly opened. Beyond them stretched a circular chamber unlike any she had seen before. In the very center... Floating above a black pedestal... Was the Shadow Crown. It glowed softly, filling the room with silver light. Evelyn's heartbeat quickened. "It's beautiful." "It's dangerous." Nyx stepped aside. "Walk toward it." Evelyn obeyed. One step. Then another. The closer she came... The heavier the air became. Suddenly... A powerful force pushed against her chest. She stumbled backward. "What was that?" "The Crown is judging you." "It doesn't trust me?" "No." Nyx's eyes remained fixed on the ancient relic. "It doesn't trust anyone." Evelyn steadied herself and tried again. This time... She made it one step farther. Then another invisible force knocked her back. She crashed onto the floor. Pain shot through her shoulder. "I can't." Nyx remained silent. Evelyn slowly stood. "No..." She wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth. "I won't lose." Again. She walked. Again. The Crown rejected her. Again. She fell. Again. Again. Again. Hours passed. Her knees were scraped. Her palms bled. Her breathing became ragged. Still... She refused to stop. Nyx watched quietly. For the first time... A small smile appeared on her lips. Not because Evelyn was strong. But because... She had stopped asking for permission to stand. As Evelyn struggled to her feet once more... The Shadow Crown gave off a faint hum. Just for a second. Nyx heard it. Evelyn didn't. The Crown... Had acknowledged her. Only a little. But it was enough. Nyx whispered so softly that even the walls barely heard. "Welcome back..." "...My Queen."
