A soft murr came from inside. David and another man took hold of the wagon’s side and carefully lowered it open. The sphinx lifted her head, casting her gaze deep into David’s eyes. She arose slowly, her legs and wings a little stiff, and ambled out of the nest over to him. Her face was pale, her hair matted, her limbs seemed scrawnier, but more noticeably her normally healthy lips were dried and cracked. She more resembled a mangy alley cat than a majestic lioness.
