He was not angry with her.
Since the moment they had disembarked from the shuttle he had been thinking about the meeting with Corbin. He had known they were being followed and had believed that they would be done with their business before the Allarians would try anything.
Edgar had been surprised to learn that they had set up an ambush for them. As he had left, Franko and the other men he had wondered why the Allarians had been so persistent. Until it had occurred to him that what they wanted now must be the information that she had, and they wouldn't care about killing her for it.
Regina, he found was a stubborn as oxen. She would not budge when it came to giving up what she knew. He did consider that she didn't have any evidence, but he dismissed that idea. Alex would not lie about this, he was certain.
He thought about where she would hide the evidence. For the life of the Goddess, he could not think of anywhere where he would find it easily.
Edgar had already ordered people to search her pub. That had turned up nothing, so he had to be patient and wait until she was ready to give it to him.
Though he was impatient to learn more about what happened to his mother, he couldn't completely ignore the fact that she was in imminent danger. Then there was that other problem, Reyes had presented.
Was she his kindred Soul?
He glanced at her to glean more information from her appearance. Edgar opened his mouth to ask her about Rhea Sol, but he closed it and tried to concentrate on avoiding suddenly dense trees before them.
"Watch out," she said, her voice high and uneven, just as he skidded around one then another tree.
"Can you try not to kill me?" she added. Her voice shrill. "I haven't had children yet and I would like a few before my demise," she said, lowering her voice as if she was talking to herself.
He said nothing. Her words struck a chord within him. Edgar had only ever thought about offspring once and that was a long time ago. He guessed human females must think about these things often.
Would it be presumptuous of him if he asked her about it?
Before he could restrain his curiosity, he was saying, "do you want to have offspring?" How many?"
Her head jerked around, and he felt her stare before she answered.
"I want to have two or three."
"I see..." he frowned.
In Karan society, one was the standard allocation, but after the Cascade, the government had started an initiative to have multiple offspring per couple. So far it seemed to be helping to grow the population."
"What about you, do you have children?"
He shook his head. "I have never been fortunate."
"Would you like them?" she asked. He heard her curiosity but felt that somehow his answer mattered to her.
Edgar shrugged. He could not say that he had wanted them but his wife, had not. After a while, he had stopped thinking about it, especially when his relationship with Belinda had gotten worse.
His jaw clenched at the thought of his wife. It was better for him if he did not think of her, he thought.
"I do not think about it anymore," he finally said. Edgar let her hear the finality in his voice and hoped she took the hint and did not ask him any more questions.
She got the hint, but he was aware of her eyes on him.
The silence between them changed but he could not help but think if she were his destined one, he would have an interesting life because the one thing he could say for sure was that Regina Wilde was a handful.
