"Why do we need an armed escort?" she said, raising her voice so he could hear her.
He looked at her over his shoulder. "We must take precautions. Did you forget the Allarians?"
"Surely, they won't come after me again."
Edgar stopped and waited for her to catch up with him. "The Allarians are known for completing their missions or die trying," he explained.
"I know that I just thought since they know I am in the hands of the Space Corp they would give up."
A small smile tugged at his lips. "Do not be naïve, they will keep coming until they get you."
Regina's shoulder's sagged, and she let out a long sigh. "I got myself into a pickle, haven't I?"
"I promise I will protect you," he said with a grave expression.
"You better." Her words were filled with amusement, but she could not hide her seriousness. "Did you forget what I said earlier?" she asked.
His brows drew in together as if he did not know what she was referring to.
"The part where I said, I would come back and haunt you."
"Aw..." he said, his voice filled with realization. "I believe you are the type of female who would do it as well," he added, sweeping her with a glint in his eyes.
A small laugh left her. "Captain it seems that you know me very well."
A small grunt left him. "Corbin's men are waiting," he said in a sharp tone.
Just then, the slamming of a door drew their attention.
"I must caution you not to say too much once we enter the vehicles up yonder."
Regina pursed her lips, of course, she knew that what she was involved in was dangerous. Did he think that she went around announcing that she was a wanted person?
Giving him a sidelong glance, she inhaled deeply. "I'm not a child captain. I know when to keep my mouth shut."
His lips drew back, and she saw his sharp incisors. "I am only reminding you that there is danger everywhere," he replied, lowering his tone.
Forcing a smile, Regina stomped towards the men. "Ever since I met you, all you do is try to tell me what to do," she mumbled more to herself than to him. "Just because you think you're the big bad beastie, it doesn't mean you can control everything that I do." She raised her voice a little higher, so he heard the last part, but she didn't stop to see if he had heard her. Instead, she took out her frustration on a few tall blades of grass, trampling them with more force than was necessary.
A laugh came from behind her, and she threw him a dirty look. Grinding her teeth, Regina ignored him and the fact that he seemed to find her more amusing than she wanted him to. If he hadn't saved her life, she thought, she would find the nearest rock and hurl it at him. Would he duck? she wondered. A grin split her lips at the vision. It would serve him right if she did hit him with a stone.
Regina was still chuckling to herself when they came to stand near the middle vehicle.
"Captain Wolfblood?" the human soldier said, looking at them for confirmation.
"I'm Commander Franko, I was sent to escort you to the ranch."
Regina watched the human; his face had a long scar as if he had been mauled by an animal. She wondered how he got the injury and immediately she knew it was not her business to ask a personal question like that.
"This way captain, "Commander Franko said, pointing to the armoured Humvee he was standing next to.
Edgar opened the back door and she climbed in, then he went to the front passenger side and slid into the seat, just as Franko took the driver's side.
"Buckle up," Franko said, turning to look at her. "The road to the ranch will be bumpy," he added as if it were for her benefit.
Regina wondered if he knew who she was. He had not shown more than ordinary interest in her as a person he had only met. Still, she noticed that he kept looking at her in the rear-view mirror before the engine rumbled to life and the vehicle in the lead sped away and he followed.
Turning in the seat she saw the other vehicle following closely behind. There was a tingling in her limbs at the idea of how official it all felt. The only time she had ever seen this sort of thing was when Samuel Beur would arrive at the rallies with his entourage, which usually had big men with big guns hidden in plain sight. Just the thought of that maniac, sent her stomach churning and she wondered when she was going to have a day when she did not feel as if she was living her life in perpetual fear.
