Emma paced her apartment, gripping her phone like a lifeline.
“This is insane,” she muttered to herself.
But she had no choice. Adrian was too damn persistent, and if she didn’t do something soon, he’d see right through her lie.
With a deep breath, she pressed the call button.
It rang twice before a familiar voice answered. “What do you want, Carter? I’m in the middle of a skincare routine.”
Emma exhaled in relief. “Liam. I need you.”
A pause. Then, “Flattered, but you’re not my type.”
“Very funny.” She rolled her eyes. “I need a favor. A huge one.”
“Go on…”
She chewed her lip. “I may have told my boss I have a boyfriend. And now he wants to meet him.”
Silence.
Then Liam cackled.
“Oh my God,” he wheezed. “Are you telling me you made up a fake boyfriend and now you need me to play the role?”
“Yes,” she hissed. “And stop laughing!”
Liam was still chuckling. “Okay, okay. Let me get this straight—wait, bad choice of words.”
“Liam.”
“Fine, fine. So this boss of yours—Mr. Tall, Dark, and Broody—doesn’t believe you have a boyfriend?”
Emma groaned, collapsing onto her couch. “No, because he’s an arrogant, insufferable ass who thinks he knows everything.”
Liam hummed. “And he’s obviously into you.”
“What? No.”
“Uh, yeah. Straight men don’t go this hard trying to prove a woman isn’t in a relationship unless they wanther to be single.”
Emma scowled. “That’s not—”
“Oh, honey, it is.”
She rubbed her temples. “Will you help me or not?”
Liam sighed dramatically. “Fine. But I’m setting some ground rules.”
“Like what?”
“First, I’m not kissing you. Second, if this man tries to fight me in some kind of ridiculous alpha male display, you owe me a week’s worth of cocktails.”
“Deal.”
“And third—” He paused. “Wait, what’s my name? I refuse to be Jake.”
Emma groaned. “I don’t know, just—fine, pick a new name.”
Liam thought for a second. “Owen. I feel like an Owen.”
Emma smirked. “You do not feel like an Owen.”
“Shut up, Carter. You just got yourself a fake boyfriend. Take what you can get.”
Emma sighed. “Okay, Owen. Let’s do this.”
And with that, her ridiculous plan was officially in motion.
Now she just had to survive dinner with Adrian Blackwood.
Piece of cake.
Right?
