Benji Arleen
“Amethyst. Can you brew me a love potion?” I ask her in my kindest manner. She glared at me for a moment. “I know who you want to fool. I won’t make it for you.” Amethyst gestured for Dusk to come near her. She whispered something to him. His eyes look shocked then he left her. “But if you do something for me, I could help you without magic.” I then looked around for a potions book in the vast amounts of bookshelves. She didn’t stop me from looking. Somehow, I knew what she wanted me to do.
“You must look for a book with this symbol on it.” She showed me a drawing of one of the most famous dark runes. It was the Black Crow with a bottle in its mouth. Was I looking for a love potion book? I didn’t know. Then I noticed that she is definitely looking for a potions book.
“We witches, haven’t bothered taking books from the shelves. Most of it is cursed. When we use the magic of each book, it has different side effects. But I figured the Dark Fay can use it easily without getting hurt.” She began to approach Dusk and told him she plans to throw a surprise party for Melody if I found the book she’s looking for.
The room was made of hard rock that formed a cave under the Willow tree. The roots, moss, and leaves covered parts of the rock. It was enormous inside than what it looks from the outside. There were ladders and staircases and thick and huge books on each shelf. Dust covered all of the books and looked like it wasn’t cleaned for many years. My fingertips checked each book cover and take it out of the shelf slightly. Finding it quickly made me frustrated.
“Do you have a library system or something? I can’t seem to find it!” I then checked the next book on the shelf. It was the same as the drawing Amethyst had. I had a rusty gold color that shaped like a crow with a small circular potion bottle. The letters on it wrote: ‘The Dangers of Potion Making.’
“You get why? Some witches die when they mix the wrong ingredients. Dark Fay like you are invincible from its power. And I could gather the ingredients but I always ask Dusk to do the cooking. He is half Dark Fay.” She explained to me. Hmm…So this is what she meant. Witches can get harmed when making potions if they don’t have dark fay blood.
“I’m pure Dark Fay,” I tell her and she said she knew about it. “That’s why your mother and I are friends. She helps me with the cooking. Now I can pass the knowledge to you.” Amethyst took some glass bottles and placed them in a makeshift bag she made herself. It looked dirty but she didn’t care.
“I’ll go collect some ingredients for Melody’s elixir potion. She’ll need it instead of a silly love potion.” Amethyst said and walked upstairs, the direction out of the cave. Dusk told me to wait for her. I continued checking the insides of the book.

The Dangers of creating Love Potions.
Love potions are considered taboo with modern witch societies for centuries. They say the side effects can cause a change of personality to those who drink it. Making is a very delicate process. Here are the ingredients and instructions:
One cup of honey
One teaspoon of nectar and three petals from a moonflower.
A sweet concoction of sleeping powder.
Two drops of diluted merry berry.
Drops of tears of a crying pixie.
The blood of the wishing lover.
One liter of Water from the Faerie River
________________________________
Here are the five most important instructions:
Instruction number one: Collect the first two ingredients
Instruction number two: ingredients: Moonflower nectar must be crushed along its petals with a pestle and mortar.
Instruction number three: Make a pixie cry by telling them a sad tragic love story.
Instruction number four: Use your blood and drop it into a flask and find the place called the Faerie River to collect water.
Instruction number five: Use a cauldron and pour each ingredient one by one according to the list. There will be a slight burning sensation while mixing it but it would help alter one’s belief in love and serve as sweet red wine.
“That really sounds so hard to do,” I said to Dusk. Dusk looked at me as if I was a fool to read it. “You should have looked for the elixir potion. Love potions are cursed. Sometimes people get out of whack or crazy after drinking that.” Dusk said in his deep voice.
“All I want is that Melody would reciprocate her love for me.” I blurted out while Dusk almost laughed. He took the book away from me and began to look for the elixir page.
“That isn’t called love. That’s obsession and infatuation mixed together.” Dusk explained to me. He began to read the instructions for the elixir to himself.
“Amethyst memorized this whole book but is scared to cook everything by herself. Some witches do… But it modifies their appearance and alters their personality. It’s like what happened to her grandmother years ago.” Dusk then took some spiders and use an incantation so that letters would appear on it. Dusk kicked a small chair nearby. He was being impatient in waiting for Amethyst.
He took a sip of some kind of green-glowing water from a translucent cup. He stopped noticing me as if I am something disgusting. He sighed before he began to speak.
“It’s not easy to be a warlock without Dark Fay ancestry. A pureblood dark fay is considered to be a future master after the apprenticeship.” His eyes began to wander like the thing he drank made him fuzzy.
“So, I could be a warlock too?” I asked him… He paused for about a minute to think. He then nodded to confirm my question.
“Don’t tell Amethyst about that. She’ll be mad if I gave you the idea to be one. Most Dark Fay end up becoming villains in numerous stories for that sort of quest.” Dusk then took another sip then finishing the contents of the cup in one gulp.
An hour later… I took a nap, then I heard a loud bang that woke me. I approached from where it came from. Upstairs I entered seeing Melody have some sort of reaction.
“Melody!” Dusk shouted his worried face was apparent. Melody looked sick…weak, and worst of all, unconscious. Her eyes opened it looked pure white. I began to think of a way so that she would be okay. I wished Wren was here to help us.
“Wake up! Please…” I cried out. I grunted and glared at Dusk. A realization started to occur in my foolish brain. “What did you give her? Why is she reacting like this?” I asked him and he said that the power they gave her was exchanged with her health. Once she drinks that elixir, she’ll be okay.
“How long will Amethyst take to get here?” I asked him I was almost to the point to blame him. But I figured that if they didn’t give her the power. The mission would easily fail. I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself as I held her in my arms.
“She’ll come as soon as she can. Benji, prepare the cauldron. I’ll bring her back to the bathtub. Some entity is trying to control her!” Dusk took her away from my embrace and I started to follow the instructions from the book to prepare what is needed.
Amethyst arrived and ran towards me as I was heating up the small cauldron placed on top of the table. The water inside began to boil. I took all the herbs, crushed them quickly, and placed them in the cauldron. I added a cup of blueberries. My eyes were tired and my adrenaline made me move faster. I mixed everything in the cauldron. The elixir turned into a glowing blue color, it smelled like crushed blueberries.
Amethyst took a large potion bottle and scoop some of the elixirs. “Two bottles of elixir must be fed to her every day for one week,” Amethyst warned me that it might make Melody hallucinate for three days after drinking it.
I did what I was told. I have to save her so that she won’t die. I knelt down near the bathtub she was sleeping in. She looked beautiful, I then slightly opened her mouth and pour the contents of the elixir slowly. I fed her the elixir whenever Amethyst instructed me to. It took a couple of days before she woke up.
“Benji?” That was what she first said. She then looked around her as if she was looking for someone. “Where is Wren?” I told her he doesn’t exist anymore. That Wren Milford left the Marauder Faeries as nothing happened. What I said might be the truth… Until that person, she was looking for stumbled upon the Willow Tree… He looked hurt and wounded. He carried his sister who looked safe and unharmed.
“What happened?” That was what all I could muster from the betrayal he had done.
“The vampires… They attacked me. And they wanted this!” Wren shortly explained. He showed me the famous glass violin of hope. “Sally is asleep but she said she’ll give this to Melody.” I couldn’t believe that Wren risked his life just for this powerful instrument. I forgave him for leaving. Maybe the Goddess had her way of saving the Faeries. “We have to evacuate!” I shouted and Amethyst and Dusk told the other apprentice witches and warlocks to never tell on them once the vampires will arrive.
