Chapter 5 - The Broken Wagon

626 Words
Benji Arleen             She just stared at the spider I and Wren caught. Unmoving, and speechless I was. “Mel, what does this spider mean?” Wren asked Melody. We were gathered in the dining room. The spider was in a small clear glass box Wren had. Her blue hair was a mess, she wasn’t as clean as she was yesterday. “Wren…This means we have to be on our way before twelve noon. I was warned by Amethyst and Dusk that the road through the border will be closed.” She then placed her bag on the floor near Wren’s cotton sofa.             “We must get ready; I gathered my 50 reckles and 10 masin coins for food and a place to stay.” Then I looked at Wren, his eyes were serious, and thought might have come into his mind. “Benji do you have any reckles yet in your pocket?” He asked me and began to look at me in a serious manner. I wanted to joke, I forced myself not to. “I have only 3 reckles left, I spent 10 reckles last night for traveling to the witch and warlock’s coven.” I began to reach my pocket slowly.             “That may help us. Should we steal food instead of buying them? The border pass would cost a lot.” I nodded taking out the only money left in my pocket. Melody looked at me, she made me blush a bit. “Benji, thanks.” She said with a sweet gesture. Her purple eyes somehow became brighter. I then walked away to get a glass of water.             Wren and Melody began helping each other to pack our needs for the journey. They went out of the house when they were done. “Hey, Ben! Can you help us with this wagon? It’s kind of broken.” Earlier I was just staring at the water. I was looking at my own reflection on the glass. Why do I always have to look terrifying? I’m lucky I have friends now, I’m not alone anymore like before. I drank my water in one gulp. I quickly approached them.             “What happened to your wagon! Wren?” I was shocked to see the wagon was severely damaged. “Benji, I made a mistake and used my magic to fix it. It got ruined since I said the wrong spell.” Wren looked funny and embarrassed while Melody did a facepalm. “When I warned you about that…” She said while picking up the small pieces of nails. “Both of you can ride on my family’s shadow horses. I’ll call my mom right away as Aunt Millie would send them here.” They both agreed to my suggestion. I then called my mother; her name is Mrs. Priya S. Arleen. I held the small black and gold framed mirror in my hand. It was a plain squared black mirror. The dark shadows spread like fireworks across the mirror. My mother appeared to be in the bathroom doing make-up. “Oh, hello Benny.” She said using her make-up brush to apply her contour gently. “Mum, I need you to ask Aunt Millie to borrow the shadow horses.” My mum was finished with her contour and grab her lipstick and accidentally smeared it across her face after I spoke. “What did you say, son? The horses are still used by your uncle!” Her face looked kind of funny as she got frustrated that she has done a mistake doing her makeup. “Tell him I need at least three horses, mum.”
