Itzal returned to pick up Amelia promptly at eleven o’clock at night. He found her waiting for him on the back street, hugging herself to ward off the cold while cautiously looking around, as if someone might suddenly appear and catch her in the act. Itzal found it both amusing and uncomfortable how two adults like them had to meet in secret. He was never one to hide things from others, much less meetings with someone he was interested in, but he understood that for Amelia, it was difficult to simply ignore Mia’s whims and do as she pleased, something Itzal had learned to overcome years ago.
Knowing this, and out of respect for how Amelia felt about Mia, he agreed to leave after dinner at Olivia’s house only to return hours later and secretly take Amelia to the operations center.
