Fire And Ice

Elle's POV The second Mason said Josh’s name, it was like a match being struck in the pit of my stomach. A hot, searing rage mixed with the ice-cold betrayal I had been carrying. I had been trying to hold it together since I walked in on Josh and his boss, but now, all the raw pain, the anger, the humiliation—it was crashing over me again like a tidal wave. I stared down at the drink in front of me, my knuckles white as I gripped the glass. Mason was sitting beside me, too close but not close enough. His presence was intoxicating—steady, calming, but with an edge that made me feel…alive. I hated that Josh’s name had even come up, but it was inevitable. He was the source of all this pain, the reason my world had crumbled. But when Mason mentioned him, something inside me shifted. The need to get revenge, to make Josh feel just a fraction of what I was going through, had always been bubbling beneath the surface. Now, it roared to life. I wanted him to suffer, to know exactly what he had lost. And I wanted to do it in a way he’d never see coming. I felt Mason’s eyes on me, studying me like he always did. It unnerved me how easily he seemed to see through the cracks I tried to hide. I could tell he was waiting, giving me space to process, but his silence only amplified the storm swirling in my head. I couldn’t get the image of Josh with her—his boss—out of my mind. The way he had looked at me, caught and guilty, but not even sorry. I had given him everything, and he had thrown it all away. For what? A cheap thrill? I felt the heat rising in my chest again, threatening to spill over. I looked up at Mason, meeting his eyes. He was waiting for me to say something, anything. But what could I say? That I was broken? That I didn’t know how to put myself back together? Or that I didn’t want to just move on—I wanted to **destroy** Josh for what he had done? Mason’s gaze didn’t waver. There was something in the way he looked at me—intense, almost protective. Like he understood exactly what I was feeling, even though I hadn’t said it aloud. And that’s when I realized: Mason was offering me more than comfort. He was offering me control. Power. A chance to take back what had been ripped away. I wasn’t naïve. I knew Mason wasn’t just some knight in shining armor swooping in to save me. He was dangerous, in his own way. He was calculated, methodical, and undeniably powerful. He built an empire on knowing exactly how to exploit people’s weaknesses, and I wasn’t stupid enough to think he didn’t see mine. But maybe I needed someone like him. Someone who understood the desire for revenge, the need to win, to come out on top, no matter the cost. Maybe that’s why I didn’t flinch when his eyes stayed on mine a little longer than they should have, or why my heart raced when he leaned in slightly, his voice low and steady. “You deserve better than this, Elle.” Those words echoed in my head. I did deserve better. But what I wanted right now was justice. I wanted Josh to pay, and I wanted to feel in control again. I took a slow, measured breath, setting the glass down with a soft thud. The cold liquid still burned at the back of my throat, but it wasn’t nearly enough to numb the chaos inside me. I needed more than alcohol to quiet the storm. I needed to take action. “I don’t know what I deserve anymore,” I said, my voice quieter than I had intended. But I knew what I wanted, and the more I sat there, the clearer it became. I wanted Josh to know what it felt like to lose something he thought he could always take for granted. I wanted him to look at me and realize I wasn’t the girl he could cheat on, walk all over, and still expect to come crawling back. I wasn’t weak. I wasn’t going to just disappear into the background while he moved on with his life. And maybe… maybe Mason was the perfect way to make Josh see that. The thought hung in the air, heavy and dangerous. My pulse quickened as I glanced at Mason again. He was watching me, waiting for my next move, his gaze unwavering. There was something electric in the tension between us, something I had been trying to ignore since the moment he walked into the bar. But why should I ignore it? Why should I keep playing by the rules when Josh had burned the rulebook the second he cheated on me? I was done being the nice girl. I was done waiting for Josh to realize he had made a mistake. If he didn’t care about me, then I sure as hell wasn’t going to care about him anymore. I bit my lip, my heart hammering in my chest as I made my decision. I turned to Mason fully, letting the weight of my words settle between us. “Help me, Mason,” I said, my voice steadier now. “Help me make him pay.” Mason’s eyes darkened, and for a brief moment, I thought I saw something flicker across his face—something raw, something dangerous. Then, just as quickly, it was gone, replaced by that cool, composed exterior he always wore like armor. “Are you sure about this?” he asked, his voice low, almost a whisper. I hesitated for only a second before nodding. “I’m sure.” Because in that moment, revenge felt like the only thing that could make the pain go away. ---
