CHAPTER FOURTEENThe Duke awoke to the sound of birds singing outside in the garden. He opened his eyes and then shut them again against the brilliance of the sun shining through the windows of his bedroom which he had left uncurtained the night before. He lay there and was conscious of a happiness pervading his whole being, a happiness that he had never known before in his life. It had been very late when he and Amé had come in from the garden.
