Sophia's pulse hammered as she sprinted down the hallway, Alex hard on her heels. The choice to trust him over Ethan felt both free and scary.
"This way!" Alex yelled above the loud sirens, pulling her towards the server room.
As they rushed through the doors, the heat hit them like a wall. Rows of servers blinked furiously, fans churning at full speed.
Maya was already there, quickly typing at a terminal. "We're losing them fast!" she yelled.
Sophia's thoughts raced. "The backup cooling system?"
"Offline," Maya replied, despair in her eyes.
"I've got an idea," Alex answered, pushing past them. His fingers sped across the keyboard, lines of code scrolling past faster than Sophia could follow.
For a heart-stopping second, nothing happened. Then, one by one, the computers started to shut down.
Maya gasped. "What did you do?"
"Forced shutdown," Alex explained. "It's risky, but it was our only shot."
As the last server went dark, the alarms finally fell quiet. Sophia slumped against the wall, relief washing over her.
But the time of rest was short-lived. Her phone buzzed insistently in her pocket. Ethan.
Sophia paused, then replied. "What do you want?"
"Are you okay?" Ethan's voice was husky with worry. "I heard about the servers-"
"We're fine," Sophia shut him off. "No thanks to you."
"Sophia, please. You have to listen to me. There's a case coming. CortexTech is claiming patent infringement."
The world appeared to tilt under her feet. "What?"
"They're claiming NeuroLink stole their tech. The faulty data, it was put to frame you."
Sophia's head spun. "How do you know all this?"
A hefty sigh crackled across the line. "Because I helped them do it."
The admission hit her like a physical blow. "Why?" she muttered.
"They threatened you, Soph. Said they'd ruin everything if I didn't play along. I thought I could protect you, but I was mistaken. I'm really sorry."
Tears pinched at Sophia's eyes. She wanted to yell, to rage at him. Instead, she questioned, "What do we do now?"
"You need to call your attorneys. Immediately. I'll do all I can from my end, but-"
A hand stroked Sophia's shoulder. She turned to see Alex, his face stern.
"We need to talk," he mouthed.
Sophia nodded. "I have to go," she said Ethan. "I'll... I'll call you later."
She hung up, feeling emptied out. "What is it?"
Alex's eyes flew to Maya. "Privately."
They fled to Sophia's office, slamming the door behind them.
"I know about the lawsuit," Alex stated without preface.
Sophia blinked. "How?"
"I have sources within CortexTech. But that's not important right now. What important is that we have a chance to turn this around."
Hope fluttered in Sophia's chest. "How?"
Alex leaned forward, his voice low. "The info they planted? It's not simply random code. It's a Trojan horse. If we can break it, we may be able to track it back to the source."
Sophia's thoughts raced with choices. "And prove our innocence."
A knock at the door stopped them. Maya stuck her head in. "Sorry to interrupt, but the lawyers are here. And the investors are expecting answers."
Sophia took a long breath, straightening her shoulders. "Okay. Let's do this."
The following two hours were a haze of legal language and cleverly disguised threats. Sophia felt like a fighter in the ring, ducking hits from all sides.
"Ms. Chen, you have to understand the gravity of the situation," her main attorney, a sharp-eyed lady called Jennifer, was saying. "If these allegations are true-"
"They're not," Sophia said firmly.
Jennifer's face relaxed somewhat. "I believe you. But believing won't win this case. We need concrete proof."
One of the investors, a silver-haired man called Mr. Zhao, cleared his throat. "Perhaps it would be best to consider... alternative options."
Sophia's stomach contracted. She knew what it meant. Sell. Cut their losses.
"No," she replied, stunning even herself with the harshness in her voice. "NeuroLink is not for sale. We will fight this, and we will win."
Mr. Zhao's eyes narrowed. "That's a risky gamble, Ms. Chen."
"It's not a gamble," Alex piped in from the corner where he'd been quietly watching. "We have a plan."
All eyes went to him. Sophia held her breath as Alex detailed their way to decode the planted code.
When he finished, the room was quiet. Then, to Sophia's surprise, Mr. Zhao grinned.
"Now that," he stated, "sounds like a plan worth backing."
As the meeting closed up, Sophia felt a glimmer of optimism. Maybe they could pull this off after all.
But as she led the attorneys and investors out, her phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number:
"Tick tock, Sophia. Time's running out. You can't win this one. - V"
A cold went down her spine. Victoria.
Sophia ran back to her office, only to find Alex already there, his face ashen.
"What's wrong?" she said, fear pouring in her gut.
"We've been hacked," he answered, turning the computer screen towards her. "And not just us. Every major IT business in Silicon Valley."
Sophia's eyes widened as she took in the moving facts. Customer details, bank data, private study - all of it exposed.
"How is this possible?" she mumbled.
Alex shook his head. "I don't know. But look at this."
He picked up a live stream. Sophia gasped. It was surveillance video from inside NeuroLink's buildings. From views that shouldn't exist.
"They've been watching us," Alex observed solemnly. "For who knows how long."
Sophia slumped into her chair, her head spinning. "What do we do now?"
Before Alex could reply, the lights flickered. The computer screen went blank, then came to life with a fresh picture.
A face, twisted and glitching, filled the screen.
"Hello, Sophia," a digitally changed voice stated. "Did you miss me?"
Sophia's blood ran cold. She recognized that voice.
"No," she gasped. "It can't be."
The face on the screen chuckled, the sound sending thrills down her spine.
"Oh, but it is. And this is simply the beginning. You stole everything from me, Sophia. Now, I'm going to return the favor."
The screen went black, leaving Sophia and Alex looking at their reflections in stunned stillness.
"Who was that?" Alex finally inquired.
Sophia gulped hard, her words barely a whisper. "Someone I thought was dead."
As the consequences of what had happened seeped in, Sophia understood the lawsuit was the least of their troubles. This was personal. And deadly.
The game had changed. And Sophia wasn't sure she understood the rules anymore.
With her past coming back to haunt her and the future of NeuroLink hanging by a thread, Sophia knew one thing for certain: the real war was just starting.
And this time, the stakes were larger than she ever could have thought.
