The guy Wolf pointed out certainly looked like Giggs, but still Rudy was unsure. He found it very difficult to believe that such a small, new club could attract the attention of such and incredible player. Even if it were true, would Rudy be able to afford his salary?
As Rudy got closer, he thought of something.
“Oh well done Wolf, you got me.” Rudy said coolly. “That is Giggs, Rhodri Giggs, Ryan’s younger brother. Am I right?” Rudy raised his eyebrows.
“How did you figure that out so quickly?” Wolf laughed in surprise.
“I remember he was in the newspaper, a few years ago now. He had gone to court for smashing some things of his girlfriend at the time. At first people had mistaken him for his brother and it caused an uproar until it got straightened out.” Rudy gave by way of explanation.
“Wow, I have no idea how you can remember something like that from years ago. If I’d didn’t look at the information on the sheet I would have had no idea who he was!” Wold laughed again and patter Rudy on the shoulder.
Rudy patted Wolf on the back in return and pointed towards Giggs;
“I heard that he was an extremely strong player when he was younger, he had the potential to be better than his brother. Unfortunately he was involved in a car accident and since then he hasn’t been quite right, he can be very violent and has been banished to the lower leagues.” Rudy said.
"I know, according to his resume, he started training with the youth team of a small club in Scotland in 1993. But he left a year later, he played for a team in Scotland League Two until 1996 but he was never officially allowed to play in any games.” Wolf added as he handed Rudy the player file.
Rudy took the information from Wolf and thumbed through the pages. It looked like he was great on the right hand wing but also played well as a forward or midfielder and this was exactly what Rudy was looking for for the team.
"Even for a small team like us, we have a lot of good players that are versatile. It wouldn’t be a bad thing for us to have someone like him, of course, he still needs to meet our criteria and pass the test.” Rudy smiled and gave the file back to Wold.
The two brothers might have natural skill, but they were not to be compared. Rhodri had clearly stated in his resume that he has not done any training or practice for almost two years, so whether he would be fit enough to play for FC United was a question they were going to need answered.
Rudy was willing to sign Giggs, even though he had a reputation because Rudy knew how this turned out. Rhodri Giggs played a huge role in the success of the team in 2005, his performance was up to standard, he still played very well.
Rudy was now in the thick of the crowd, he looked around the training ground marvelling at the amount of people that were there.
"Wolf, how many people do we need to select this time?” Rudy asked, feeling a bit overwhelmed.
There had to be over a hundred people there to try out for the team, Rudy had a preference for younger players, under 21 was ideal for him to train and shape them to his liking. After that age it became more difficult and he found that their abilities were more limited. By the time they were thirty, the players were practically ready to retire.
Rudy looked through the crowd and he did not see many that looked under the age of twenty one, he was a little upset but it was quiet common to have a limited pool of players to choose from.
"Ah today we will need to recruit seventeen players, I know it sounds like a lot, but we need to have substitutes and back up players just in case.” Wolf stated.
"Ok and have we sorted out the issue with the contract?” Rudy asked.
“Mr. Smith asked his solicitor to help make the part time contract. We will get each players to sign but they have to understand that we are still very small and still getting established. Funds are limited and we can only offer them so much, we can’t be compared to those big clubs yet.” Wolf explained.
It seemed that talking about this subject reminded Wolf of something funny and he laughed out loud.
“I just remembered, Droylsden will play against the Northern Premiers first this year. Mr. Smith though that he might approach some of their players and offer them full time contracts but when he got there he found they were all well over the hill!” Wolf laughed again.
This obviously amused Wolf and he continued to laugh, Rudy on the other hand did not find it that funny and gave a polite laugh only. But Wolf’s words made Rudy think about the league, from where they were now there were four levels for them to get through before they made it to the English National League.
The English National League was a mixed bag of semi-professional and professional teams, any team that wanted to enter this level had many strict guidelines and requirements to meet. Not only did the club require a certain level of club professionalism but they must have good records and a strong infrastructure along with numerous other things.
