Chapter 2

Jace’s POV                 I made it back to the packhouse and was greeted by my future Alpha, Jethro, who arrived tonight so he could start school tomorrow. I and the others had arrived a day earlier and heard the rumors and excitement of the young Alpha coming to school here.                 “Alpha.” I greeted.                 “Beta.” He greeted back and chuckled. “How was your first day at Creston?”                 “Oh, you know, like any first day. They already caught whiff of you coming there for your final year, so excitement is definitely stirring.”                 He sighed, “Yeah, it always is.” His eyes had a sadness to them, and I knew why. He was still looking for his mate. He desperately wanted to find her, but so far, to no avail, and this was his last stop within the pack territory. “Why don’t you get some sleep… and a shower.” He laughed and I growled a little then laughed with him.                 “Alright Jethro, I’ll see you tomorrow. Good night.”                 “Goodnight Jace.” He responded.                   I woke up at 6AM and rolled out of bed. I grabbed a change of clothes and headed to the shower. I stood there for a while thinking about Kat. There is something about her, I feel like I need to point her out to Jethro, but I don’t know why. She doesn’t seem like the type to want attention if I look back to the bus yesterday. I dismissed the thought and got out of the shower. It’s now 6:30 and I quickly dressed and grabbed my backpack, then wandered to the kitchen for breakfast. Jethro – the young Alpha, Colton – the young Delta, and Eric, the young Warrior, were already in the kitchen eating. I walked in and they greeted me.                 “Does it feel good to finally be here?” Colton asked looking at Jethro who looked downcast.                 “Yeah, somewhat. I’m just…” he sighed, “I don’t want another disappointment.”                 We remained silent as his confession; we knew what he meant. He thought he had found his mate, because he could smell a whiff every once in a while, but could never actually figure out where it was coming from. Almost like she was but wasn’t there. The disappointment when he could never find her was immense, and he seemed even more depressed than if he were to have never caught that scent. The time came to leave so we all packed up and loaded onto the bus.                 Kat’s POV                 After I finished my morning routine, my wolf, Honor, poked at me.                 ‘What?’  I asked                 ‘You should wear that.’ She replied.                 I felt a pull towards an ear cuff my brother gave me before I had to leave my old pack. The base was copper colored, and it traced the outside of my ear. The top part hard three green beads that fit the color, and there was silver wire keeping the beads attached to the cuff. There was a silver chain attached towards the front of the ear cuff dangling about three inches with a silver moon attached to it.                 ‘Uh, okay, if you say so.’ I replied and put it on.                 ‘I do say so.’ She smirked.                 I finished getting dressed and was wearing bootcut blue-jeans, combat boots, a dark red sleeveless shirt, and a navy-blue hoodie. My hair was the same as always, wrapped in braided ponytail bun.                 ‘We are eating, correct?’ Honor popped back in as the smell of breakfast hit me. Eggs, bacon, pancakes, melted butter.                 ‘Oh, yes. I’m starving.’ I smile as I felt her happiness.                 I grabbed my bag and loaded it will my homework and books and went to the dining hall where I grabbed breakfast.                                 We loaded onto the busses and I again found an empty seat. The bus filled up, and I was again alone in my seat. I was listening to music throughout the ride watching the scenery fly by. I defocused and listened to the music and watch the fast pace of the trees wondering what it would be like to fly. Somehow, I’m lulled to sleep by the vibrations of the bus, the rumble I could feel of the engine, and the scenery. I wake up when we stop, and everyone starts getting up to leave.   Jethro POV                 We arrived at school and offloaded heading into the building. The breeze was swift, but cool. You could feel any stiff air warming up from the sun. I had tried to come up with a few excuses as to why I couldn’t be at school today, but none of them were good enough to satisfy my mother, so here I am, walking into my ‘new’ school. I know that I’m supposed to go to these different areas to fine my mate, but I didn’t see the point. I am a strong warrior and wolf. I don’t see how some random she-wolf I find is going to change that in me. Jace, Colton, and Eric were walking beside me as we walked into the building. They were chatting about football try-outs from yesterday.                 “So, Jethro, are you going to try-out for football?” Jace asked curiously.                 “Probably, I mean, I have to try out for something, might as well be something I can do and that I’m interested in.” I didn’t really want to, but I knew my friends were going to try out and make it. I had been in football in my previous school, and I did enjoy it. It was a good break in between my alpha training and school.                 “Good! What’s your first class? I wonder if it with me.” Jace looked over at the schedule I had in my hand, “Oh, you’ve got trig, first off, that sucks. I’ve got English.”                 “Oh, I’ve got trig with you.” Colton piped up.                 “Oh, good, at least someone I know will be there.” I signed, “Let’s head over.”                 Colton lead me to the classroom where I picked up a book and yesterday’s assignment from the teacher Mr. Dunn.  I found my way and sat next to Colton in the back next to the window. I grabbed out a notebook from my backpack in case I needed to jot anything down from the lesson. I drifted into my mind thinking about why I couldn’t just stay in my old school and finish out high school. I spent three years abroad leaning from different schools about how to be an Alpha, there they taught normal subjects and Alpha subjects- how to take care of the pack, how to keep it safe. Colton, Eric, and Jace were with me learning their corresponding duties as well and it helped up to get a lot closer as well. I think that was part of why we needed to do it.                  “Mr. Williams.” I snapped back to reality when the whole class was looking at me along with an exasperated teacher, “Just because you are the young Alpha does not mean you can daydream in class.”                 “I apologize Mr. Dunn; it won’t happen again.” I replied genuinely.                 “Alright, just make sure it doesn’t.” He turned back and started teaching the lesson again. Class was almost over anyhow. I haven’t taken any notes yet. It’ll be fine, we are in the basics right now. The bell rang a few minutes later and we exited the class with the new assignment in hand.                 “What’s your next class?” Colton peered at my schedule again, “Physics? I’m not in that until later, but I think that Jace is in that.”                 “Okay.” I was still trying to get out of my head. I was extremely distracted, though I’m not really sure why. I started heading in the direction of my locker so I could put my book away and head to the next class.   Kat’s POV Physics was pretty fun, trigonometry was next. I had put my book away and started heading to trigonometry when someone slammed into my shoulder knocking me into the lockers. Sharp pain shot from my shoulder through my collar bone and into my neck. I took a quick breath and quietly apologized and tried to keep moving. Someone stepped in front of me to stop me. I tried going around them, but they just blocked me.                 “You just knocked into me, what do you say you little b***h?” A very annoying high-pitched voice popped up. Arlene.                 “I apologize; won’t happen again.” I whispered keeping my head down.                 “It better not or you’ll regret it.” She hissed and her little posse of she-wolves laughed and trailed behind her.                 I walked off to trigonometry and walked into the classroom. The room smelled like gunpowder, smoke, and firewood. The smell was a wonderful combination that I didn’t know existed. I couldn’t find the origin of the smell, so I went back to where it was strongest, in the back by the window. A good spot that I like regardless of the smell. I pulled out my book and notebook as the lesson began.                 Jethro POV                 I walked into Physics and I was greeted by the greatest smell ever. It was sweet mixed with ginger and honeysuckle. My wolf, Xavier, started pacing and became restless. I quickly scanned the room trying to fine the origin of the smell, but I couldn’t locate it. I saw Jace in the back trying to get out of a conversation with a girl who was turned around in his seat talking to him. I followed the scent back to its strongest point, in the back next to the window. Jace had already sat in the seat, so I took the one next to him. He looked and saw it was me and relief flooded his face.                 ‘Help me, this girl won’t leave me alone.’ He pleaded through the mind-link.                 I smirked, ‘What did you do?’                 ‘Nothing! What makes you think I did something?’ he retorted.                 ‘Oh, might I bring up Cassandra?’                 ‘Oh, shut up, will you just help me?’ he frowned.                 “So Jace, there is a party Saturday night at Jess’ house, why don’t you bring Jethro, Colton, and Eric over? We could all have some fun.” The girl smiled at him.                 “Well, you see, I- “ Jace started, but I cut him off.                 “We have a project we are working on. We can’t I apologize miss…?” I lied.                 “Oh, I’m Kelanie, and are you sure… uh… I don’t actually know your name.” Kelanie retorted trying to keep her nice girl act up.                 “Jethro, and, yes, I’m sure.” I kept watching the front wondering when class would get started.                 The bell rang finally cutting the conversations in the room. The girl at the table in before us turned back to the front to face the teacher. I could still smell a faint tingle of ginger when class ended. I didn’t know who it was, but it felt like the tease from before. All that’s been on my mind has been finding my mate, and I can’t. Now I’m dreaming of what she smells like. The bell releases us into the hallways to make our way to the next class. For me, it’s a study hall where it would normally be foreign language. I learned a language when I was overseas, so I don’t need to learn a new one. I went to class and found everyone there. Since they spent the years overseas with me, they didn’t need to learn a new one either. They were all gathered near a desk in the back and I joined them.                 “Jethro! You think the teacher would let us head over to the library? It’s more comfortable there.” Eric asks me.                 “I don’t know, we can always ask.” I thought about the couches there. It would be more comfortable than these desks.                 “I’ll go ask.” Jace walks up front to talk to the teacher who is looking over some paperwork.                 “I hope she does. Maybe I can take a nap.” Eric says to no one in particular.                 Colton frowns, “Don’t you have homework?”                 “No,” he smirks, “I did it all in class while the teacher was ranting.”                 “Lucky.” Colton grumbled as Jace joined us again.                 “She is writing us a pass, but says if we get into any trouble, this will be our last visit to the library during her study hall.” Jace said as he grabs his backpack.                 “Great! Let’s go!” Eric bolts out of his seat and starts heading towards the front. I follow him and the others grabbing our passes and heading to the library.                 The library was quiet and didn’t have very many people in it. We showed our passes to the librarians and they allowed us to find a place to become situated.                 Kat’s POV                 English was uneventful. I was at my locker about to depart to foreign language when I was stopped by Kelanie. She was the pack warrior’s daughter, and she had it out for me. About a year ago someone spread a rumor that I was out to get the attention of her boyfriend. I still don’t know who he is. Kelanie and her friends gathered around me.                 “Hey, Kels, isn’t this the girl who wants your man?” one snickered.                 “Yeah, she still needs to be reminded of her place.” Another one stated.                 “Look, I don’t know what you’re referring to, but I need to get to class.” I stated watching all of them. I was aware of the three to my left cutting off that exit. Kelanie stood directly in front of my backed up by a couple of her friends. I tried walking through them but Kelanie shoved me against the lockers. The locker handle dug into my back. Before I could react, a punch landed in my stomach followed by a blow to the head. A couple girls ran up and kicked me while I moved my arms to protect my head and curled into a ball. After a few more blows, they stopped and I carefully assessed before attempting to get up. The girls were still here, but they drew a bunch of attention. Now they were getting cocky. A couple hands wrapped around my arms and dragged me to my feet slamming my back to the lockers, again. I felt blood trickling down my face, but I kept my eyes on the main attacker right now, Kelanie. She stepped forward and swung at me. I ducked and her fist came into contact with the lockers instead. I sidestepped and knocked over the girl on my left. She went tumbling to the floor as I turned to face my attacker again. She was rubbing her fist and there was a pretty good dent in my locker. Great, just what I need. She stepped toward me again and swung, I blocked her punch, grabbed her wrist, stepped forward, spun on my heel, and connected my elbow to her face. She let out a surprised cry and fell clutching the side of her face. A couple more of her friends came forward to attack me. I knew I could overpower them, but the more I fought back, the worse it would be for me later. I succumbed to their attacks after landing a few blows myself. I was thrown too the ground and took a defensive curled into the fetal position protecting my head. I was starting to black out when I heard another commotion.                 “Hey! What are you doing!?” A deep, smooth voice announced.                 “She deserved it!” Kelanie stated.                 “Everyone to class, Kelanie and the rest of you, to the principals!” The voice demanded.                 Kelanie groaned and let out a frustrated scream/growl. I unfurled and started to stand up putting a hand on the lockers to steady myself. Little black dots started appearing in my vision and I wobbled a little. A light hand landed on shoulder; I flinched and turned to see who it was. A pair of deep brown eyes appeared concerned looking at me. Jace. Unconsciously, I made sure my hoodie was still up. I noticed a couple of other boys there as well. One of which was staring at me wide-eyed. Then that smell from earlier hit me- gunpowder, smoke, and firewood. I looked down.                 “Are you okay, do you need help?” He asked me concerned.                 “Yes, I’m fine, thank you.” I responded and turned to walk away. A wave of dizziness hit me and I reached out to grab the lockers but it was a little too late. I fell hitting the ground and sunk into darkness.   Jethro’s POV The bell rang and we went out to our lockers, which weren’t too far from the library. We actually did pretty well and got all of our homework done and, before the bell rang, Eric, Colton, and Jace were telling me about the football try-outs from yesterday.                 “I still don’t believe that there was a girl at tryouts.” I said chuckling.                 “Well I guess we will see what you say at the try-outs today when she is there as well.” Jace mocked offence.                 “Right. You can also prove that you’re actually getting better while we wait for the unnamed female to present herself at practice.” I retorted.                 “Hey, I’ll have you know I did better than half the players and the girl was actually picking up on the basics pretty well, so I wouldn’t be surprised if her name is on the roster.” He smirked.                 After putting our stuff away, we started heading down the hallway towards history when a commotion caught our attention. A group of students was blocking off the hallway grouped around a couple of girls who were facing the lockers and they looked like they were kicking something. Then a smell hit me. The one from before, honeysuckle and ginger. I recognized one of the girls, she was the one who approached Jace in an earlier class.                 “Hey! What are you doing!?” I yelled now seeing a figure on the ground being assaulted by these girls.                 “She deserved it!” Kelanie stated.                 “Everyone to class, Kelanie and the rest of you, to the principals!” I demanded. Kelanie groaned and let out a frustrated scream/growl. The figure unfurled and started to stand up putting a hand on the lockers to steady themself. I then noticed it was a girl; she wobbled a little trying to balance. Jace had approached her from behind and laid a hand on her shoulder; she flinched and turned to see who it was. She instinctively touched her hoodie. She noticed us after doing that. My wolf who was pacing around in my head froze when we saw her eyes.                 ‘Mate!’ Xavier yelled. I froze.
