Karen checked her mobile again, there were no new messages from Jerry. What was taking him so long? She wondered if perhaps he had walked past the entrance to the cave and by now was halfway into town without realising it.
She considered sending him another text, but then stopped herself.
The creatures seemed to be coming closer, judging by the reflection of their shadows on the opposite wall, and that could only mean one thing. They were ready for another assault. Karen closed her knees unconsciously, her instinct for self-preservation automatically kicking in. She knew in truth that neither she nor her companion were in any state to fight off the creatures, and as she had already submitted to some of them, she knew that she would survive another onslaught.
