Jacobs mulled over the selection of missing person files scattered across his desk. It struck him as somewhat odd that, when everything was on computer, his predecessor had insisted on keeping paper files. But he presumed it was probably through force of habit as the previous inspector was from a time before computers were the norm.
There were 18 in all, some going back as far as 10 years. Most concerned strangers who might or might not have been visiting his town at the time of their disappearance.
In many instances, those who had reported their loved ones as missing could not be one hundred per cent sure that they were actually in the vicinity, only that they had mentioned earlier that they might be heading that way.
