Karen watched as her mother played with Charlotte, cradling the baby in her arms and making gurgling sounds to emulate those of her granddaughter.
It hurt Karen that she felt an actual pang of jealousy that she could never remember her mother showing her such affection when she was little. But then, she reasoned, if she had been the same age as Charlotte, she would hardly remember.
