CHARLIE CHAPLIN’S FINAL SPEECH In the final speech of The Great Dictator8 the protagonist in disguise admits that he doesn’t want to be an emperor. He urges men to help one another – “Jew, Gentile, black man, white” – and live by each other’s happiness, without distinctions. I find this a truly wonderful message, and heartily endorse it. Chaplin’s amazing work has indeed often been an inspiration in my life, and particularly for what of it I poured into this book. I believe envy to be a pointless feeling: it is not by hating others that we improve ourselves, it is not destroying others that we will find happiness; nothing would in fact bring less satisfaction. When the protagonist envisions nature as a benevolent mother, he reminds his audience how free and beautiful life can be. Mayb
