CHAPTER 3: The Alpha, the Luna and the heir

MAISY’S POV: I looked around the room waiting for someone to speak. No one answered. Although I didn’t really expect them to since I was invisible and they probably didn’t even realise I went to the same school with them. “Umm my name is Maisy by the way, I go to school with you all.” I mumbled, feeling slightly embarrassed that I was making another attempt to talk to these girls when they didn’t even bother to reply to me before. “SHUT UP b***h! Are you trying to get us all killed? This is not summer camp and I didn’t come here to make friends. We have been kidnapped and now is not the time to hold hands and sing around the campfire!” One of the girls screeched at me. Although these girls didn’t know me I knew them. With no friends at Hatfield I had spent an awful lot of time observing and from the sound of that voice I knew it was Flora who had just spoken to me so rudely. Who was she to call me a b***h! She doesn’t even know me and yet I’m supposed to sit here and listen to her call me names. I couldn’t let her get away with that. “Listen Franny or whatever your name is, I know you and your bimbo squad won’t make it two minutes in here without me so I’d have a little more respect for your only hope of survival ... bitch.” I spoke strongly and with courage so she would hear the certainty in my voice. It must have had the desired effect because she just huffed and started to introduce her friend Amber whom I already knew but I let her introduce anyway, not wanting to seem rude after my previous explosive outburst. Finally Betty spoke up. She was the youngest of all of us at just 16. She had her birthday last week. “I’m Betty.” She muttered quietly. “I’m really scared, I don’t know what is happening. I just went to find my friend Christina in the cafeteria and then those men came charging in. Please help me.” She sounded close to tears. As much as I wanted to comfort her, there was simply no way. I was as much a prisoner as her. “Betty? Are you okay?” I hummed in a soothing tone. She didn’t respond so I continued.” Listen Betty, I know this is a bad situation we are in but we have each other and the only way to get through this is together. Just stay strong. ” I really didn't believe my own words so I really hoped that Betty didn’t hear the falseness in my statement. “I will try Maisy, I promise.” She whispered back. Before anymore could be said Daisy informed me that she could hear footsteps not too far away, so I informed the girls and we all fell silent. In only a few short seconds the door to the room opened and three people stepped inside. I could hear the clicking of two pairs of men’s dress shoes on the stone floor and the dull, light footsteps of what must be a female wearing soft flat shoes. Before I could focus my senses on much else the bag from over my head was pulled off carelessly, causing a friction burn on my left cheek. Although it was stinging I knew it would heal in a few hours so I tried not to pay it much attention. I looked around the room and noticed that it was actually quite beautiful. It seemed to be a castle. The floor looked to be pure marble and the walls a solid brick; adorned with magnificent tapestries showing wolves of all colours and sizes. To the left of me there was a wall of 3 floor to ceiling windows with the most intricately ornate frames around them. I couldn’t see a single sliver of light through the windows so I knew night must have fallen. However, the room we are in was brightly lit by the wall sconces evenly situated throughout the room. Before I could process anymore of my surroundings, the back of a hand hit my hard against my cheek. I snapped out of my dazed state and managed to look up into the face of my captors. The man that looked down at me had a cold expression on his face and a scar travelling down on side of his throat. If this had been the first time I had seen this scar it may have been a shock, but I had seen this man before ... when he stole me. Behind this man there were two other people, a man and a woman. The woman looked kind and gentle; she reminded me a lot of my mother. She also looked sad and regretful which made a lump form in my throat. This woman clearly didn’t want to partake in whatever it was they were going to do to us. Next to her was the most handsome man I had ever seen. He had jet black hair and glistening light grey eyes that were almost white. His skin was a cool light tan colour and his body was comparable to that of a god. “Oh god Daisy would you stop this already! Our heat will have to wait until we escape.” I shook my head, hoping the thought of this man caressing every inch of my body would fall straight out of my head. But he was staring at me so intently that even when I didn’t look his way I could feel his eyes on me. I looked to my right and saw the rest of the girls all looking equally as shaken and disorientated as I. Daisy, who was still weak from the wolves-bane, mumbled something quietly in the back of my mind but I could quite make it out as she was drifting off again. The first man cleared his throat and everyone’s head snapped straight in his direction. This man wielded power in his presence alone and when he demanded your attention you were helpless to deny him it. Then he started to speak. “I am Alpha Xander. This is my Luna Khloe and my son and future Alpha of the Nightshade Pack Benny.” They both stepped forward when they heard their name mentioned but remained behind the Alpha at all times so as not to shadow him. “We are going to untie you now but rest assured any attempts to escape will be met with equal punishment. There are armed guards surrounding this wing of the castle and they will not hesitate to use their weapons if provoked.” The Alpha opened the door and a guard stepped in and started to free our arms and legs. I looked at my wrists and rubbed at them hoping the red marks would fade faster somehow. I was quickly pulled away from this useless task when the Alpha started speaking again. “Obviously you all belong to us now and you will do well to remember this. Anything the pack requests of you, I suggest you comply. This area where we are now is the tower and is forbidden to all who do not wish torture upon themselves. You girls will be given a section of the castle comprising six rooms. A bedroom each, a common space including a kitchen area and a washroom. I do not wish to see you anywhere else in the castle unless you are performing your duties. Khloe will take it from here.” The Alpha finished his speech and abruptly left the room. Luna Khloe stepped forward and smiled at us all. Although the smile didn't quite fill her face it was comforting to see a kind gesture nonetheless. “Girls, welcome to our pack. I know this may seem scary and there must be much you don’t understand but I assure you if you comply with the needs of the pack you will not die here.” She handed us each a binder full of papers and continued to speak. “These binders are a compilation of all the tasks you may be asked to fulfil in your duties here and the manners and personal qualities we expect you to present. A full wardrobe will be provided to each of you and I expect you to dress appropriately. A guide of what garments should be worn and when is also in your binders. Benny shall show you all to your area of the castle momentarily and a guard will visit you shortly to take you to get showered and get rid of your old clothes. I shall see you all soon I expect.” On her way out, Luna looked at me for what felt like a very long time and nodded her head as if we had an unspoken mutual respect for one another. Not wanting to seem rude to the only person who had shown me kindness in this place I simply nodded back and she turned and left the room. I looked over at Benny expecting him to be watching me still but it shocked and slightly saddened me that instead of watching me he was just scuffing his shoes against the marble floor as if he was kicking around an invisible football. As soon as his mother left he stepped towards us and grumbled instructions under his breath. “Get up. Follow me to your rooms. Keep up and don’t fall behind, if you do that guards will take you for punishment.” He sounded monotone and bored. It was clear that he had been forced to help his parents with us and simply wasn’t interested in making small talk. He wasn’t quite as cold and harsh as his father had been but nowhere near as gentle and kind as his mother. Finishing his statement he stepped out of the door without even bothering to look back in our direction and we all quickly got up from our chairs and sprinted to follow him. I was the first person to leave the room after Benny. He was walking very fast and it was hard for me to keep up since I hadn’t eaten for at least twelve hours I was feeling a little woozy from hunger. I followed him down a hallway which was very similarly decorated to the room we were just in, with marble floors and brick walls. The only difference was that the walls were now plain with no hangings and only small light sconces adorned the walls of the long narrow hallway. Unlike the first time I was carried to the room we didn’t descend any stairs and we didn’t enter any outside area. Although, I couldn’t actually see my surroundings before so I couldn’t really say accurately whether or not I did to begin with. Instead we travelled down the long passageway and into a large circular opening which seemed to branch off into 5 similarly long passageways. We took the third passageway and continued down it at an alarmingly fast pace and I turned back to make sure Betty was still keeping up. Although I knew all of the girls from school I only seemed to worry for Betty. The other girls both seem so strong and independent but Betty looked so tiny and frail and though I know it isn’t my responsibility to protect her I couldn’t stop myself from looking back to check on her. Abruptly we came to a stop and I slammed hard into Benny's back and fell to the floor at his feet with a loud slap on the marble flooring. He quickly snapped his head in my direction and just when I thought he would hit me he held out his hand to help me up. For a second I thought he was looking at me almost kindly, but when he let go of my hand he snapped his head towards the other girls and the bitterness was back. “Stupid girl! What a waste of time it was bringing you here. Do you even understand who I am? It’s a miracle you ever got to breathe in the same room as me let alone run into me! How dare you touch me.” He spat at me with a really venomous edge to his voice. I knew at this moment that I was surely very wrong when I assumed this man was not as cold as his father. He looked away from me and addressed the other girls; not daring to recognise my existence. It was almost as if he was addressing them and not me. With his hand he gestured to his left, telling us this was the entrance to our wing and uttering a warning to follow the rules in our binders. Without even opening the door for us he turned on his heel and left without another word. I turned to the door to my left and slowly twisted the handle and gave it a light push. Before I could push the door fully open Flora pushed past me and walked straight into the room with her friend trotting along behind her. I looked at Betty who was standing beside me now and she looked back at me with the same blank expression. I felt empty and scared and I would bet my last penny that she felt the same. In an attempt to comfort both her and myself I reached down and took her hand in mine and we stepped into the room together. Into the unknown.
