Carver trudged to the barn in a flurry of snow. He’d spent the past twenty-four hours, other than the scant five he’d taken to sleep, making sure all of the three-sided sheds and fences were sound, and that there were plenty of hay bales and water in the corrals for the cattle. Satisfied, he headed to the barn where they housed the animals that required more nutrients and care in bad weather. It irked Carver to think he might not have been first choice as foreman. Carver prided himself on his work experience as well as his work ethic, and being a pawn in Sutter’s revenge against Bishop for not giving in to him made Carver angry.
