When night fell, Carver left the small foreman’s house at the edge of the ranch with his umbrella open against the steady downfall of rain. When he got inside the shed, he looked over the heifers and noticed that the one Burke had pointed out earlier in the day walked with her tail straight out, a sure sign she was getting ready to drop her calf. He fashioned his bed in the straw just outside her stall where he could see her between the bars of the gate and sat back to wait, ready to help if needed.
