The air in my office felt suffocating. My fingers clenched around my phone as I stared at the dead screen, heart pounding like a war drum. They know. Who? Damon? His mysterious associate? Someone else entirely? My breath came fast and shallow as I replayed the distorted voice’s words in my head. You need to leave. But leave where? The office? The city? Run for my life? I wasn’t sure how long I sat there, frozen in a whirlwind of fear and indecision. But then— A knock. I nearly jumped out of my skin. “Ava?” Damon. My pulse spiked dangerously as I scrambled to shove my phone into my drawer. I forced my expression into something resembling normal before answering. “Yeah?” My voice was steady—good. The door cracked open, and Damon stepped inside, his gaze instantly locking onto me.
