Caedmon's POV
Fenrir kept going back and forth in my head. He could tell that this young woman was our mate. But we knew nothing about her. Her face was barely visible. She had thick dark, curly hair that covered her face partially. Her clothes were baggy, they looked big on her frame. She didn't look large, or even menacing. There was a sense of strength emanating from her, yet, she also looked so fragile, like she would disappear within my arms. I wanted to embrace her and not let her go. I wanted to comfort her and shield her from whatever made her, made both of them live in such conditions. This cottage had no fridge, no heating and winter would come soon. If it rains, the river may grow and water could start seeping through the place. It might even have leaks! Goddess knows it has been there for years with no upkeep.
I talked to Fenrir, we needed to wait. She may even be human for all we know. Though Fenrir says otherwise, we cannot pinpoint what she is. All he says is that she is strong. We decided to give the reigns to Luke. He had already felt that connection towards her, the need to protect her. After all, that is part of the gamma's role.
Luke made plans to monitor her as Zach started looking through the people that had passed through the town as well as any paper trail we might find of them. Theo is here with me trying to help me keep collected, plus, his connection with Zach is unmatched, so he would know instantly if anything was found.
Luke links me and tells me he's got eyes on her. It seems she works at the grocery store. She works there? Then how long has she actually been here? My mate was right under my nose and I didn't notice. This infuriated me. For how long have both of them lived in that state?!
Zach doesn't really find much, but Luke manages to take a photo of her and that is enough for Zach to dig a little deeper and talk to some folks around the town.
They both arrive later at night and Theo makes his way to the forest to keep an eye on the cottage. It seems they're siblings. Her name is Nyx. Her sister's is Mila. Mila is a teenager who spends a lot of time in the library. They've been here a few months. Nyx got work through a temporary agency. Is she just passing by? It seems that they booked a room at the beginning. Maybe it was too much of an expense and then they found the cottage.
Nyx, I love how the name rolls along my tongue. Like the Greek Goddess huh? My shadowy mate, hiding who she is, shrouded in darkness. I can't wait to know every detail, every corner of you.
The next day rolls around and Luke goes about his business, and so does Zach. Theo got back early in the morning and didn't report much. They stayed indoors. He did notice that Nyx seemed odd, hunched over and walking at a slower pace. Is my mate perhaps ill?
As Luke switched with Theo, he followed Nyx at a distance. Something felt strange to Luke. His bond to her is not that strong yet, but present enough for him and his wolf Oberon to show concern. She takes a different path. It looks like the direction she came from when they saw her for the first time arriving at the cottage on her own. He kept far enough to not be detected. As he watched her, he noticed she stopped by a tree with red flowers. They flew through the air. She dug a hole and got a bag out. It seems the bag had some money and a hoodie. It looked dirty and ragged. Why would she put that on? She kept walking up to the edge of the town, near the train tracks. Her hoodie is up, covering her face. She kept a low gaze and her hands in her pockets. It was there when she stopped and met a suspicious man. She took the money out of her pocket and he gave her a bag. I'm not sure of what it had, but I hoped to find out. Suddenly, she snapped and looked up. I reacted a moment too late...
Fck!
We made eye contact and she started running away. I could've sworn her eyes glowed.
Sht, she is quite fast and agile for someone that looks so fragile.
-Caedmon, we've got a runner!
What!
I'm sorry alpha. She noticed me and started running away.
For fcks sake!
Calm down! said Zach through the link. If she's running, there is one place she definitely needs to go to first. She will not flee just like that. She is going to go back to the cottage to get her sister. So we need to get there first.
I kept running behind her. She hasn't shifted, so she might not be a wolf at all. What did she buy in the first place?
Caedmon
For fcks sake! Can something work on my end? I barely know about her, and now she's going to run away!? I cannot lose my mate. I've waited so long. I've kept my cool, Fenrir has been so patient with all of it. I'm 26! Mates are usually found so much sooner. I thought it was never going to happen, but Fenrir kept strong for me. He knew it would happen. I will not lose her now. Rather than waiting for the car, I get a bag of clothing and shift. Picking the clothing with my mouth, I make my way along with Theo and Zach. They both shift into their wolves, Cadell and Drusus. We pick up the pace and make our way into the forest. Luke links me and tells me he's lost sight of her. She might already be at the cottage!
We are close and we shift back to our human form. As we get dressed, we hear the ruckus and the voice of one of them asking questions desperately. I take that's Mila.
-Stop! says another voice. Is that Nyx?
-I will not risk your life or mine for this place. We can start a new home somewhere else.
We get closer and hear the argument.
-Please Nyx, I don't want to go. Can't we just talk first and see if we can come to reason? Are they really here for us?! Mila exclaims as Nyx stops in place and looks at her.
-Mila, I love your kind nature, your innocence is something I wish I still possessed. Please understand, we do not know them, can we truly risk...
We don't mean you harm...
