Chapter 14

1123 Words
Nyx POV If you are not honest, I cannot help you or Mila. It feels like you are hiding something. I need your honesty and accurate information. I know that you are a hybrid. Mila is a wolf, just like us, even though she doesn't have a scent for some reason. I have also seen the mark that is behind your ear. I couldn't help but to tense up at his words. Of course I'm concerned! Mila's safety is my number one concern, even more than my own life. When he mentioned my ear, I snapped my gaze up at him. I could feel my heart racing, my fists were balled up. It was a visceral response to his questions. He knew more than I expected. I took a deep breath to tried to calm down. I know that all of these questions might be overwhelming, but I need you to answer as best as you can. You have already seen what we've done for both of you. But my job is to also protect the pack, which is why I need to know. As I focused on subtly slowing my breathing, Caedmon looked at me with kindness. Theo was still there and his brows furrowed as he sighed and waited for a response. He sat on the couch beside the desk, silently waiting. I looked into Caedmon's eyes and decided to just be open. For Mila's sake. Yes, I am a hybrid and no, we do not come from a pack. The number you saw is technically my original name. Mila was a number too... The name I have is because of Mila. She loves to read and as she read about history, she fell in love with that name. She said that it suited me. A small smile appeared on my face. Remembering her as a young child, how we connected, every time she came towards me to tell me about her readings, her warm smile, it brought me back to the joy she has always made me feel. I do not have any recollection of my earlier years. But all I can say is that I was, along with Mila and many others, inside of a place where they did things to us. Many died because of it, and we are, at least that I'm aware, two of the survivors and the only two that have escaped this place. I could see Theo change his position, he changed, from lounging in the couch, to hunched over with an arm crossed as the other rested on it and his hand was on his chin. Caedmon's hands left the desk as he kept listening to me. It almost looked like he was getting angry. Is this part of the reason why you have bumps in your head? Or a piece of your ear missing? Yes... I was tagged and to run away successfully, I chose to rip the tag out of my ear, ripping it in the process. As crazy as it may sound, rather than keeping the weird chunk of flesh dangling from my ear, I had Mila cut it out and then we burned the skin to stop the bleeding. It is something that I don't hold with pride, and I'm glad they didn't get to do this to Mila. She didn't deserve to carry that experience with her. As for my head, it is part of what they did. They had tubes with long needles in my head. I was forced to sleep a lot of the time. But I do remember clearly when I removed the needles from my head along with all the cables on my body before I took Mila and we left. When I was awake, I was sent to train my mind and body. We needed to reach a designated level or we would be terminated. Look, please, for now, let's end this here. We are not intending to do anything suspicious. I just want to work, pay my debt and give Mila the safety she truly deserves. Just one more question. Does anything here feel different for you? Anything that you can perceive? (That's an odd question to ask) Well, not really. Then again, I'm not sure about what you mean. If it's in regard to danger, no, I don't. He didn't look pleased with my answer. Okay, you may leave, but we will need to talk later. Okay, thank you. I left the office and Luke was already at the door with Mila. Wait until you see the room! Said Mila excitedly. She walked me a little further down the hallway and it was the last door on the right side. Caedmon preferred for you two to have a room on our floor as a safety precaution. Said Luke as Mila grabbed my hand. It's okay, we are good here. That was all Mila said. I missed seeing her like this. She smiled at me sweetly as she nodded her head at me, just like she did before she knew what would happen to her, or what was happening to me... We entered the room and it was much more than I could've imagined. A black, metal four-post bed with emerald green sheets and golden-colored fabric tied to the posts that opened to cover the bed like a canopy. The room had forest green walls with gold trim and the curtains were tied with gold fabric to keep the view of the large wall-sized window that actually opened to a balcony. The rug in the center of the room was mint green with white detailing, it was so fluffy under my feet. A couch rested on the wall as it faced the TV that was mounted on the wall in front of it. A chandelier that dripped crystals illuminated the room, the crystals were round and looked almost like rain drops. The colors of the room didn't feel overwhelming, they complimented the gold and beautiful flowers above the dresser. Luke told us the time for lunch and dinner, as well as other details from the pack, including Mila's soon-to-be schedule, pack training grounds and practice. Lastly, he informed us that he would take us, along with Theo, to get Mila's uniform and clothing for us. He also told me what my job would be. Since I am good (based on what they saw at the cottage) with food and plants, I could work on both the kitchen and the green house. That didn't feel as much. I expected more demanding work. But I am thankful that I have been given this chance. As scared as it makes me, I will do anything for my sister. I will not ruin this chance.
