Chapter 6: The Storm Inside

797 Words
Rain lashed the city in sheets, slapping against the high windows of Vale Tower like troubled spirits. Inside, Aria sat alone in her office. The office lights were dimmed, the only sound the relentless tapping of water against glass. Most of the staff had long since left for the day. But she found herself unable to leave. After the conversation she had the previous evening with Damian. *Don’t make me want it.* The words had planted themselves in her brain like a catchy tune she couldn’t get out of her head. This was business, she told herself. Emotional manipulation from a man who knew more about power than anybody. But a voice inside knew the truth. The elevator softly chimed in the background. She turned.and froze. Damian stood in the doorway. His dark suit clung to his wet body. His tie was loose. His hair rumpled. This man bore little resemblance to the ruler of a billion-dollar business. This man resembled someone very human. “I didn’t expect you to still be here,” he said quietly. “I could say the same,” she replied, getting up. “The storm has disabled half the building's security network. I am checking the systems,” he explained as he stepped inside, closing the door behind him. “Since when does the CEO personally get involved in tech-related problems?” she raised an eyebrow. A slight smile appeared on his lips. “Ever since I stopped trusting other people to fix my mistakes.” There was a note in his voice – heavy, remorseful. This drew her to him like the gravity that drew falling things. “Damian.” she began hesitantly. “You don’t have to pretend anymore that you’re made of steel,” “Steel doesn’t break. I do,” he muttered under his breath, laughing softly and bitterly. This revelation surprised her. For a long moment, the only light in the room came from the city below, illuminating the edges of his face—the tired eyes, the weight he carried like armor. “What happened to you?” she asked softly. His eyes locked with hers. “You really want to know?” “Yes she drew nearer to me. “You rebuilt the boat for him?” “No,” Damian said. “For revenge." The word hit like thunder. He turned to her, his eyes darkened. “My father didn't lose this company overnight. He was betrayed―-by men who smiled at him during the day and buried him at night. I learned early that true power isn't about winning. It's about living." Aria’s heart constricted. “And that's why you don’t trust anyone,” she said “That’s why I can’t.” He let out a breath and pushed his hand through his hair. “You don’t know what it costs to let someone close.” “Perhaps you're paying for something that isn't still owed,” she said as she moved a little closer. For a brief instant, he didn’t stir. Then, very slowly, he looked at her. Traveled his eyes across her face. Not as the employee. Not as the plan. Simply as.something that shouldn’t. “You don’t understand,” he said quietly. “When I start to care about someone, I destroy them. “You don’t get to decide that,” she shook her head. Lightning flashed again. The office filled once more with the silver of the storm. For a moment, their reflections stood together in the window: two figures poised between ambition and something much more dangerous. The silence continued. The storm intensified. “Go home, Aria,” Damian said finally, though his voice hardly held conviction. “Before this becomes something it can’t.” “Ohh.” In the pause between heartbeats, she studied him. Then she nodded. “Fine. But at some point, you’re going to have to choose: the storm outside or the one in your heart." Her footsteps echoed as she left. They were less loud than the sound of the rain. When the door closed behind her, Damian turned back to the window. His reflection gazed back at him. Composed. Powerful. Untouchable. For the first time in years, the man behind the glass did not look like a conqueror. This man seemed like a person afraid of losing more than power. --- This evening, Aria emerged into the rain to get to her car, wet through but somehow invigorated. Just how this bond would play out she couldn’t say—but she knew already that their lives were about to have the gaming table reshuffled. Somewhere deep down, beneath the thunder and the fear, she knew: This wasn’t merely business anymore. Damian Vale’s secrets were on a collision course with hers.
