"Awaken...little one."
The whisper was borne on the silver light.
Softly.
Old.
Isolated.
I couldn’t tell if it was the room around me, or somewhere deep inside my own heart.
The light consumed everything.
The ruined hall.
The scared faces.
Even the pain that had been burning under my collarbone was gone in the warmth of it.
I blinked.
When my eyes cleared I wasn’t standing inside the Voss Estate anymore.
I was in the middle of a never-ending silver field.
Moonlight was on the grass like new snow. There were thousands of glowing flowers that moved in a wind I could not feel.
“Where am I?” I mumbled.
No one replied.
I turned around slowly.
The world stretched out before them. Forever and a day.
There were no walls.
No mansion.
No yelling.
Silence and nothing else.
A strange peace descended on me, lifting a weight I had not known I carried for years.
Then I heard people walking.
Slow
Constant.
Some one was coming.
My heart beat faster.
A woman moved through the silver blossoms.
She was in white, which fell in soft folds, and glistened in the moonlight. Her long black hair swayed gently behind her, and her silver eyes...
They were just like I did.
I stopped.
She gave a sad smile.
You've grown."
My throat constricted.
"I... do I know you?"
She stopped a few feet away.
"No,"
Her voice was very quiet and sad.
But I have known you from the instant your heart began to beat.
My chest hurt.
There was something achingly familiar about her.
Not because I knew her.
I did because every part of me wanted to.
"Who are you?"
She put her hand on my face.
Her fingers never did so touch me.
But I felt their heat.
“My name doesn’t matter anymore.”
“Because it does to me.”
A small smile played on her lips.
You never lost your father’s stubborn heart.
Daddy?
I caught my breath.
"My father had died before I was born.
"That..."
Her eyes dropped.
was what they wanted you to believe.
The earth seemed to sway beneath my feet.
"No.
“They lied for your sake.
“Who said a lie?”
Your so-called family.
My eyes filled with tears.
“Why?”
She looked up into the infinite sky.
“Because they were afraid of the truth.”
My mind was working overtime.
Nothing made sense any longer.
My entire life...
My breath came in gasps.
"was that all a lie?
She said nothing.
The only reply was silence.
My throat swelled up with a lump.
Every birthday alone.
Every door that was locked.
All the words of harshness.
Every second I wondered what was wrong with me.
Had everything been built on a lie?
“I don’t understand.
Yours.
“Where?”
”When you’re ready.
Frustration welled in me.
“Yeah, I’m sick of hearing that.
My voice rang over the silver field.
I’m sick of everyone talking in riddles.
The woman smiled once more.
There was pride in her eyes this time.
"Good.
“What?”
'You're asking questions at last.
She came closer.
“The frightened little girl who took everything is starting to go away.
I lowered my eyes.
I’m not a brave person.”
“You don’t have to.
Her voice was soft.
“Courage is not the absence of fear.
“It chooses to go ahead despite it.”
Those words went deep inside me.
Before I could say anything, a powerful wind blew the silver flowers around us.
The peaceful field went black.
The moon overhead shook.
The woman's face changed in a flash.
"No...
she said softly
"They found us."
"Who?"
The ground shook.
Cracks spidered out beneath our feet.
A low growl came from the darkness beyond the flowers.
Not Kael’s.
Something more ancient.
Far, far scarier.
The woman caught hold of my shoulders.
There was urgency in her eyes.
"Pay attention."
"I hear you.
"Your wolf is not lost.
My heart fell.
"Huh?"
It never went away.
I looked at her.
But all said—
They were wrong.
"So why can't I hear it?"
"Cause it's been sleepin'."
One hand she laid softly on the glowing mark of my birth.
It was sealed before you came into the world.
The heat under my skin throbbed.
Who locked it?
I did.
Shock took the words out of my mouth.
You?" "
"I had no alternative.
'Why?' he said.
Her eyes were wet with tears.
Cause if I didn't..."
"...you'd be dead that night."
The ground shuddered again.
This time more roughly.
The growl was much closer.
Wherever the sound reached the flowers they withered.
Fear spread through my chest.
"What is that?
She stared into the dark.
Something that has waited 20 years for this moment.
The shadows were moving.
Not with the breeze.
Alone!
They halted, and joined, to form the outline of a great wolf.
Its eyes glowed crimson.
Its body consisted of nothing but darkness.
My every instinct told me to run.
The woman moved to block my way.
"She's not for you.
The shadow wolf chuckled.
Its voice was a hundred voices speaking together.
The seal is broken.
“It's not finished.
“Sure will.”
The creature stared at me.
And when it does...."
"...she will be one of us."
I’m no one’s,” I whispered before I could stop myself.
The shadow wolf grinned.
“We shall see.”
It sprang.
She thrust both arms forward.
A deafening roar came from her hands as silver light erupted, clashing with the darkness.
That force threw me backwards.
I hit the ground hard.
When I looked up, the two powers crashed into each other like waves.
The woman screamed.
She was failing.
“No!
I scrambled to her side.
She turned around.
"Don't approach!"
"But—"
"Hear me.
Her body began to turn into a silver light.
“There is little time.
My heart went into a panic.
“Please, don’t go.”
She smiled through her tears.
“I never really went away.
"I don't want to stay alone anymore."
”You won’t.
She would not look at me.
He found you.”
I followed her eyes.
The silver field was starting to fade.
In the waning light I saw a pair of familiar golden eyes.
Kael.
He was screaming my name.
His voice was remote, as if it had come from another world.
The woman touched my forehead lightly.
When you waken...
...trust the Alpha.
Everything collapsed.
The silver field was no more.
The flowers were no more.
The moon shattered into a thousand glittering shards.
My eyes snapped open.
I breathed hard.
The mansion returned to focus.
The marble floor, cracked.
The broken columns.
The guards were afraid.
Before I fell, a pair of strong arms caught me.
Kael.
He was a man again.
His black hair was damp against his forehead, a fresh cut streaked his cheek, but his golden eyes looked into mine with unmistakable concern.
“Lyra.”
His voice was firm.
"Do you hear me?"
I gave a weak nod.
Before I could utter a word, a horrified scream echoed through the hall.
Every head turned to the main entrance.
Lucien looked away from me.
He was looking at the night sky beyond the broken doors.
His face was white all over.
"Nooo...
he whispered .
He is up.
A deafening howl swept through the kingdom.
That was no cry of a common wolf.
It was old.
Strong.
And so great that every werewolf in the mansion, Kael included, instinctively dropped to one knee.
And I was the last one standing.
And somewhere beyond the dark wood...
Something was coming up.
Right for me.
