THE PART HE NEVER TOLD HER Maya barely slept that night. Daniel's last message kept replaying in her mind. There's something I should tell you. She had tried convincing herself that it was probably nothing serious. Maybe something about his family. Maybe a problem at home. Maybe something from his past that he wasn't comfortable discussing yet. Still, there was a strange feeling in her chest. Something was coming. When she woke up the next morning, she checked her phone before getting out of bed. There was no message from Daniel. That was unusual. For the past few days, his good-morning text had become part of her routine. She told herself not to worry. He probably just got busy. She got ready and went about her morning. By afternoon, there was still nothing. Maya tried calling him. No answer. She stared at her phone. "Okay," she whispered. "Don't overthink it." But it was difficult not to. That evening, her phone finally rang. Daniel. She answered immediately. "Hello?" "I'm sorry." Maya sat up. "Where have you been?" "I needed some time." "Are you okay?" There was silence on the other end. "I'm okay," he finally said. "But I need to explain something." Maya's heart began beating faster. "Okay. I'm listening." Daniel took a deep breath. "My parents separated when I was younger." Maya said nothing. "My mother raised me for years. My father wasn't really around. Then, recently, he came back into my life." Maya frowned slightly. "Is that what happened yesterday?" "Yes." "Is he okay?" "I don't know." Daniel's voice became quieter. "He wants me to forgive him for everything that happened." Maya didn't know what to say. She had expected a secret. She hadn't expected pain. "Do you want to forgive him?" she asked. "I don't know." There was another silence. "I spent years telling myself that I didn't care," Daniel continued. "But when he showed up again, I realized I still had questions." Maya listened carefully. "What questions?" "Why did he leave? Why didn't he come back sooner? Why did he let my mother struggle alone?" His voice sounded tired. Maya could hear the emotion behind his words. "You don't have to figure everything out tonight," she said. "I know." "And you don't have to pretend you're fine." Daniel was quiet. Then he laughed softly. "You always know what to say." "No, I don't." "You do." Maya smiled. "Maybe I'm just listening." "That's the problem." "What?" "I like talking to you." Her smile disappeared. Daniel continued. "More than I expected." Maya looked down at her hands. "I like talking to you too." The words came out quietly. But Daniel heard them. "I was scared to tell you," he admitted. "Why?" "Because I didn't want you to think I was complicated." Maya shook her head even though he couldn't see her. "Everyone is complicated." Daniel laughed. "That's true." "And having problems doesn't make you a bad person." For a few seconds, neither of them spoke. Then Daniel said, "Thank you." Maya smiled. "You don't have to thank me." "I do." The next day, they met again. This time, there was no café. No rain. No dramatic moment. Just the two of them sitting on a quiet bench beneath a large tree. Daniel looked different. Not happier exactly. But lighter. Like telling Maya the truth had taken some weight off his shoulders. "I'm glad you came," he said. "So am I." He looked at her. "You weren't scared?" "Of what?" "Of hearing all that." Maya thought about it. "No." "Why?" "Because I don't think someone's past should automatically decide their future." Daniel smiled. "You really believe that?" "Yes." He looked away. "I've never told anyone that much." Maya's heart softened. "Then I'm glad you trusted me." Their eyes met. For a moment, neither moved. There was something unspoken between them. Something becoming stronger. Daniel reached for her hand. Maya hesitated for only a second before letting him hold it. It was a simple gesture. But somehow, it felt important. Neither of them said anything. They didn't need to. A week later, things seemed to be going well. Maya and Daniel talked almost every day. She was beginning to learn his little habits. He always laughed when he was nervous. He became quiet whenever something was bothering him. He pretended not to care about things that actually mattered to him. And he remembered everything Maya told him. One afternoon, they were walking home together when Daniel suddenly stopped. "What?" Maya asked. "There's something else." Maya smiled. "Another secret?" "Not exactly." "What is it?" Daniel looked at her. "I think I'm falling for you." Maya's heart jumped. She didn't know what to say. She had imagined him saying those words. But hearing them was different. "Daniel..." "I don't expect you to say anything." Maya looked at him. "Why?" "Because I don't want to pressure you." She smiled. "You're not." "Good." She looked down, trying to hide her smile. Daniel noticed. "You know you're smiling, right?" "No." "You are." "Maybe." He laughed. For the first time, Maya allowed herself to admit what she had been trying to hide. She was falling too. But just as everything seemed perfect, Maya noticed something. Daniel's phone had been ringing repeatedly. Each time, he looked at the screen and ignored it. "Who is it?" Maya asked. "No one." She raised an eyebrow. "Daniel." He sighed. "It's my father." "Why aren't you answering?" "Because I'm not ready." Maya nodded. She understood. But later that night, Daniel called her. His voice sounded different. "Maya." "Yes?" "I need to tell you something." Her stomach tightened. "What happened?" "My father wants me to leave." "What?" "He has accepted a job in another city. He says I should go with him." Maya became silent. "How long?" "I don't know." "Are you going?" "I don't know." The room suddenly felt colder. A few weeks ago, Maya barely knew Daniel. Now the thought of him leaving felt unbearable. "Daniel..." "I'm sorry." "Don't apologize." "I don't want to leave you." Maya closed her eyes. Neither of them spoke for several seconds. Then Daniel whispered, "Maybe we found each other at the wrong time." Maya opened her eyes. "No." "What?" "I don't believe that." "Why?" "Because sometimes the right people meet at difficult times. That doesn't mean they have to give up." Daniel said nothing. Maya didn't know what would happen next. She didn't know whether Daniel would stay. She didn't know whether distance would change everything. But she knew one thing. Whatever happened, she didn't want fear to decide their story. Because what started with one unexpected glance had become something neither of them could easily walk away from. And for the first time, Maya realized that love wasn't only about the beautiful moments. Sometimes, love was about choosing to stay when things became uncertain. And their biggest test was just be.
