THE SECRET BETWEEN US
For the first time in weeks, Maya felt as though things between her and Daniel were finally becoming normal.
They talked again.
They laughed again.
Even their little arguments didn't feel as frightening as before.
But Maya had learned not to trust happiness too quickly.
Sometimes, just when everything seemed perfect, life had a way of reminding you that nothing was guaranteed.
It happened on a Thursday afternoon.
Maya was sitting outside the library, waiting for Daniel.
He had promised to meet her after class.
Ten minutes passed.
Then twenty.
Then thirty.
She checked her phone again.
No message.
She was about to call him when she saw him across the road.
Daniel was standing beside a black car.
A woman was talking to him.
Maya didn't recognize her.
She watched as the woman handed Daniel an envelope.
Daniel looked worried.
Very worried.
Maya stood up.
Before she could cross the road, Daniel noticed her.
Their eyes met.
The woman turned around.
She said something quietly to Daniel before getting into the car.
The car drove away.
Daniel walked toward Maya.
"How long have you been standing there?"
"Long enough."
His expression changed.
"What did you see?"
"Who was she?"
"Maya—"
"Who was she, Daniel?"
He looked away.
That was enough to make her heart sink.
"You know her."
Daniel remained silent.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"It's complicated."
Maya laughed bitterly.
"That's always what people say when they don't want to tell the truth."
"That's not fair."
"Then explain it."
Daniel looked at the road where the car had disappeared.
"I can't."
Maya stared at him.
"You can't?"
"Not yet."
She felt anger rising inside her.
"Then when?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Maya shook her head.
"You know what hurts the most?"
He looked at her.
"It's not that there's another woman. It's that you're standing here looking at me like I'm someone you can't trust with the truth."
"That's not what I'm doing."
"Then what are you doing?"
Daniel opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
Maya stepped back.
"I thought we were past this."
"We are."
"Then prove it."
Daniel reached for her hand.
She moved away.
"I need time."
"Maya, please."
"No."
She turned and walked away.
Daniel didn't follow.
That night, Maya couldn't sleep.
She kept replaying the scene in her head.
The woman.
The envelope.
Daniel's expression.
And one question that wouldn't leave her alone.
Who was she?
At nearly midnight, Maya's phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
She stared at the screen.
For a moment, she considered ignoring it.
Then she opened it.
There was only one sentence.
You deserve to know what Daniel has been hiding from you.
Maya's heart began beating faster.
Another message arrived.
Meet me tomorrow. Alone.
She stared at the screen.
Her first thought was Daniel.
Her second was fear.
She typed:
Who are you?
The reply came almost immediately.
Someone who knew Daniel before you did.
Maya didn't respond.
A few seconds later, another message appeared.
And someone who knows why he came into your life.
Maya froze.
Why he came into her life?
What was that supposed to mean?
She read the message again.
Then again.
She wanted to call Daniel immediately.
But something stopped her.
If this person was lying, she needed to know.
If they were telling the truth...
She wasn't sure she was ready for what she might discover.
The following afternoon, Maya went to the meeting place.
It was a quiet little park away from the busy streets.
She sat on a bench and waited.
Five minutes.
Ten.
Fifteen.
Just as she was about to leave, someone approached.
It was the woman from the day before.
Maya stood.
"You."
The woman nodded.
"My name is Elena."
"Why did you ask me to come?"
Elena looked around before sitting beside her.
"Because Daniel isn't telling you everything."
Maya's stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
Elena took a deep breath.
"Daniel and I have known each other for a long time."
"Are you his girlfriend?"
"No."
Maya felt a strange mixture of relief and confusion.
"Then what are you to him?"
Elena looked down at her hands.
"I'm his sister."
Maya blinked.
"His sister?"
"Half-sister."
Maya didn't know what to say.
"Why didn't he tell me about you?"
"Because we haven't spoken properly in years."
"Why?"
Elena looked at Maya.
"Because of our father."
Maya's expression changed.
"What happened?"
"Our family fell apart a long time ago."
Elena hesitated.
"Daniel blamed himself for what happened."
"Why?"
"He made a decision when he was younger. A decision that changed everything."
Maya waited.
Elena reached into her bag and removed a photograph.
She handed it to Maya.
Maya looked at it.
There was a younger Daniel standing beside an older man.
The resemblance was obvious.
"That's his father," Elena said.
Maya looked back at her.
"Where is he now?"
Elena didn't answer immediately.
Then she said quietly,
"That's the problem."
Maya frowned.
"What problem?"
"He's coming back."
Maya felt a chill run through her.
"What?"
Elena leaned closer.
"Daniel knows."
"How long?"
"Several weeks."
Maya suddenly remembered Daniel's strange behavior.
The secret phone calls.
The nights he disappeared.
The way he sometimes looked as though something was weighing heavily on him.
She whispered,
"Why didn't he tell me?"
"Because he was trying to protect you."
"From what?"
Elena looked directly into her eyes.
"From the reason your relationship may have started in the first place."
Maya's heart stopped for a moment.
"What are you saying?"
Elena stood.
"I'm saying you should ask Daniel one question."
"Which question?"
Elena hesitated.
Then she said,
"Ask him whether meeting you was really an accident."
She walked away.
Maya remained frozen on the bench.
The world around her seemed to become strangely quiet.
She looked down at the photograph again.
Then at her phone.
Daniel had sent her a message.
Can we talk? Please.
Maya stared at the words.
For the first time since she had met him, she wondered if their first meeting had truly been love at first sight...
Or if there had been something else behind it.
Something Daniel had never told her.
She slowly typed her reply.
Yes. We need to talk.
And somewhere across the city, Daniel stared at his phone, knowing that the secret he had tried so hard to protect was finally beginning to come to light.
