Something About Him
Maya had always believed that people entered your life for a reason.
She just never expected one of those people to be Daniel.
The next morning, she woke up before her alarm.
For a few seconds, she simply stared at the ceiling, trying to remember what had pulled her out of sleep so early. Then she reached for her phone.
There was one new message.
Daniel: Good morning. Hope you slept well.
Maya smiled before she could stop herself.
She read the message twice.
It was such a simple thing. Just a few words. Nothing dramatic. Nothing that should have made her heart feel lighter.
Yet somehow, it did.
She typed a reply, deleted it, typed another one, and finally settled on something simple.
Maya: Good morning. I did. Hope you did too.
His reply came almost immediately.
Daniel: I did. I think yesterday stayed on my mind.
Maya stared at the screen.
She didn't know what to say to that.
Her fingers hovered over the keyboard.
Maya: Why?
The three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Then his message came.
Daniel: Because I didn't expect meeting you again to feel so natural.
Maya's smile disappeared for a moment.
Not because she disliked what he'd said.
Because she liked it too much.
She placed the phone beside her and got out of bed.
She didn't want to become one of those girls who spent the whole morning thinking about a boy.
But by the time she reached the bathroom, she was already thinking about him.
Later that afternoon, Maya met Tessa.
The moment Tessa saw her, she raised an eyebrow.
"You're smiling."
Maya looked confused. "So?"
"So, you don't normally smile like that for no reason."
"I smile."
"Not like this."
Maya laughed. "You're imagining things."
Tessa folded her arms.
"Is Daniel texting you?"
Maya looked away.
That was enough of an answer.
Tessa gasped dramatically.
"I knew it!"
"Keep your voice down."
"Why? Is he hiding in the bushes?"
Maya laughed again.
"No."
"Then what's the problem?"
"There is no problem."
Tessa studied her face.
"Do you like him?"
Maya became quiet.
The question was simple.
The answer wasn't.
"I don't know," she finally said.
Tessa smiled.
"You know."
Maya shook her head.
"We've only just started talking."
"And?"
"And I don't want to rush anything."
Tessa nodded.
"That's fair."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Tessa leaned closer.
"Just be careful."
Maya looked at her.
"Careful of what?"
"People can be charming when they're trying to impress you."
Maya thought about Daniel.
He hadn't really tried to impress her.
That was the strange part.
He listened.
He remembered little things she told him.
He didn't make every conversation about himself.
And whenever Maya became quiet, he never pressured her to explain.
Still, Tessa's words stayed in her mind.
That evening, Daniel called.
Maya stared at his name on the screen for several seconds before answering.
"Hello?"
"Hey."
His voice sounded different over the phone.
Softer.
More familiar.
"How was your day?" he asked.
"Fine. Busy."
"Busy doing what?"
"Nothing interesting."
"I don't believe you."
She laughed.
"Why?"
"Because you seem like someone who always has something going on."
Maya smiled.
"Maybe I'm just good at making ordinary things sound interesting."
"Then tell me something ordinary."
She thought for a moment.
"I had tea this morning."
Daniel laughed.
"That's your interesting story?"
"Yes."
"Terrible storyteller."
"Then you tell me something."
He was quiet.
"Okay," he said. "Today I passed the place where we first met."
Maya's smile slowly faded.
"The bus stop?"
"Yeah."
"Why were you there?"
"I had somewhere to go."
"Did you think about me?"
Another pause.
"Maybe."
Maya laughed softly.
"Maybe?"
"Okay. Yes."
She looked down at the floor.
There was something about the way Daniel spoke that made ordinary words feel important.
They talked for almost an hour.
About school.
About family.
About childhood memories.
About things they wanted to do someday.
At one point, Daniel asked, "What's something you don't tell people easily?"
Maya became quiet.
"That's a difficult question."
"I know."
"Why did you ask it?"
"Because I want to know the real you."
Her heart skipped.
She didn't answer immediately.
Finally, she said, "I don't trust people easily."
Daniel didn't laugh.
He didn't tease her.
He simply said, "Then I'll be patient."
Those four words stayed with her long after the call ended.
A few days passed.
Their conversations became part of Maya's routine.
Good morning messages.
Random jokes.
Late-night conversations.
Little questions.
Little secrets.
Nothing had been officially defined between them.
But something was happening.
Something neither of them was naming.
On Friday afternoon, Daniel asked if she wanted to meet at the park.
Maya hesitated.
Not because she didn't want to see him.
Because she did.
"Sure," she replied.
When she arrived, Daniel was already there.
He stood when he saw her.
"You came."
"You invited me."
"I know."
They both laughed.
They walked slowly along the path.
For a while, neither of them said much.
The silence wasn't uncomfortable.
It felt easy.
Daniel eventually looked at her.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Yes."
"Do you believe in love at first sight?"
Maya stopped walking.
The question caught her off guard.
She smiled.
"I don't know."
"You don't?"
"I think you can notice someone immediately. You can feel drawn to them. But love?"
She shook her head.
"Love takes time."
Daniel nodded thoughtfully.
"Maybe you're right."
"Why did you ask?"
He looked at her.
"Because sometimes you meet someone and it feels like you've known them longer than you actually have."
Maya's heart beat faster.
She knew exactly what he meant.
But before she could respond, his phone rang.
Daniel looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
The warmth disappeared from his face.
"Everything okay?" Maya asked.
He didn't answer immediately.
Then he stepped away to take the call.
Maya watched him.
She couldn't hear the conversation, but she could see the change in his body language.
He looked worried.
When he finally returned, he seemed distracted.
"Is something wrong?" she asked.
"My cousin."
"Is he okay?"
"Yeah. It's just family stuff."
Maya nodded.
"You don't have to tell me."
Daniel looked at her.
"Thank you."
They continued walking, but something had changed.
Maya could feel it.
There was a part of Daniel he hadn't shown her yet.
A part of his life that existed before she came into it.
And suddenly, she wondered how much she really knew about him.
That night, Maya lay in bed thinking about the afternoon.
She liked Daniel.
She couldn't deny it anymore.
But liking someone meant opening a door.
And once you opened that door, you couldn't always control what came through it.
Her phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
Daniel: I'm sorry about today.
Maya replied.
Maya: You don't have to apologize.
A few seconds later:
Daniel: There's something I should tell you.
Maya sat up.
Her heart began beating faster.
She stared at the message.
Then another one appeared.
Daniel: But I don't know how to say it.
Maya's fingers tightened around her phone.
She typed slowly.
Maya: Then tell me when you're ready.
The typing indicator appeared.
Then disappeared.
Nothing else came.
Maya placed the phone beside her.
She didn't know what Daniel was hiding.
She didn't know whether it would change the way she saw him.
But for the first time since they had met, she understood something clearly.
Falling for someone wasn't just about discovering the beautiful parts of them.
Sometimes, it meant being brave enough to discover the parts they were afraid to show.
And Daniel, she realized, was carrying a story of his own.
A story she was beginning to become a part of.
She just didn't know yet whether that story would bring them closer...
or pull them apart.
