Chapter 14 — The Contract

When Serena returned home, Damian was waiting.
“What did your father say?”
“Victor Hale.”
Damian’s expression changed.
“My father mentioned that name.”
“They said he was responsible.”
Damian nodded slowly.
“We need to find him.”
Before Serena could respond, Damian’s phone rang.
It was his lawyer.
“Mr. Cross, I need to speak with you immediately.”
“What happened?”
“The marriage contract.”
Damian frowned.
“What about it?”
“The one-year agreement has a clause.”
“What clause?”
“If either party develops genuine romantic feelings, the contract can be terminated.”
Serena stared at Damian.
“What?”
The lawyer continued.
“Either party can end the agreement immediately.”
Damian looked at Serena.
Neither spoke.
The lawyer ended the call.
Serena slowly said,
“So if you fall in love with me…”
Damian interrupted.
“I know.”
“And if I fall in love with you…”
“I know.”
Silence filled the room.
Serena looked away.
“Maybe we should end it.”
Damian’s heart tightened.
“You want to?”
“I don’t know.”
He stepped closer.
“I don’t want to.”
She looked up.
“Why?”
Damian didn’t answer.
Because he couldn’t tell her the truth.
He didn’t want to lose her.

That night, Serena stood on the balcony.
Damian joined her.
“I’ve been thinking.”
“So have I.”
She looked at him.
“Maybe our marriage doesn’t have to stay a contract.”
Damian’s heart raced.
“Serena…”
“I don’t know what this is between us.”
“Neither do I.”
“But I’m starting to care about you.”
Damian stepped closer.
“So am I.”
Their eyes met.
He gently touched her cheek.
Serena closed her eyes.
Then they heard a loud crash downstairs.
They immediately separated.
Damian ran downstairs.
A window had been broken.
On the floor was another envelope.
Inside was a message.
STOP LOOKING FOR VICTOR HALE.
Damian’s expression became cold.
Then he saw the second line.
OR YOUR WIFE WILL PAY THE PRICE.
