Damian immediately ordered security around the mansion.
Serena stood beside him.
“Who would threaten me?”
“Someone who knows we’re getting close to the truth.”
“Victor?”
“Maybe.”
Damian took her hand.
“You’re not leaving my sight.”
Serena tried to smile.
“That’s an order?”
“Yes.”
She shook her head.
“Of course.”
⸻
The next morning, Damian insisted on driving Serena to work.
She looked at him.
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you?”
“Because I want to.”
She smiled.
“That’s new.”
“What?”
“You actually admitting you want something.”
Damian almost smiled.
Then a truck suddenly swerved toward them.
“Damian!”
He slammed on the brakes.
The car crashed into a barrier.
Serena screamed.
Damian immediately turned toward her.
“Are you hurt?”
“My head.”
He reached over.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“Are you bleeding?”
“No.”
Damian opened his door.
“Stay inside.”
He stepped out.
The truck was already speeding away.
Security arrived seconds later.
Damian returned to Serena.
He noticed her hands were shaking.
He pulled her into his arms.
“I’m here.”
She held onto him.
For the first time, Serena didn’t care about the contract.
She didn’t care about revenge.
All she knew was that she didn’t want to lose him.
⸻
That evening, Damian sat beside Serena’s bed.
She had fallen asleep.
He gently moved a strand of hair away from her face.
“I love you.”
The words escaped before he could stop them.
He froze.
He had never said them aloud.
Not even to himself.
But they were true.
Damian Cross had fallen in love with his rejected bride.
And now his greatest fear wasn’t losing his revenge.
It was losing Serena.
